Health Week

Last week we held our first official Health Week at Brighton Primary School, which was a great success.  The primary goal of Health Week is to raise awareness of health and well-being within the BPS community while promoting healthy habits related to nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and social/mental health.

We had talks and question and answer sessions from athletes, including Emily and Mackenzie from Hawthorn (AFLW) and para cycling Olympic medallist, Alistair Donohue, a digital wellbeing webinar for our parents, an incursion from Stomp Dance and our annual Lapathon, which raised funds for our new playground.

We also enjoyed some special edition healthy canteen options, student vs staff games, some special buddy class activities, lunchtime yoga, a community treasure hunt and walk/ride to school day.

Loud Shirt Day was another highlight organised by our Hearing Unit, with staff and students wearing "loud" shirts to support children with a hearing loss.  Loud Shirt Day is a global campaign celebrated in October. On this day we are reminded that kids with hearing loss can achieve anything. To support mental health we invited all students in the school to think about their personal strengths.

Everyone looked fabulous in their loud shirts and we also held a Loud Shirt Art Competition. The winner of the senior competition was 6A with their strong messaging and vibrant colour palette, narrowly taking the win from the intricate work of 6B. The cross cultural theme from 5C was both meaningful and timely. Well done 5C. Special commendation also goes to 4C for their quirky pineapple themed entry with the quote, ‘Be a pineapple, wear a crown and be sweet on the inside!’ Inspiring from 4C.

The junior prize was a close call. 1D came in second with a delightful floral design, with each student writing their own personal strength in a flower.  An eye-catching geometric design from 1A and creative use of natural materials teamed with the slogan ‘Rise, Shine and Grow from 1C were highly commendable. 1B were the worthy winners with a t shirt showing a class photo of everyone in their loud shirts plus the glitter laden message, ‘Always be you because you are great!’.  Congratulations 1B.

In the words of 3C – Be loud, Be Proud.
