Excursion to the Melbourne Zoo

At our excursion this week we were very fortunate to see a lion eating a kangaroo, elephants crossing between two enclosures, as well as other fascinating animals such as the Black Handed Spider Monkey, Hippo, Python and so much more.

The students also engaged in a Wild Lab program, where they learnt to differentiate a 100+ years old tortoise and those that are younger, as well as investigating the features and basic needs of different animals. Some of the students used the resources available at the program to build a habitat for the animals.

We also stopped at several pop-up information stations in the Zoo. One of the stations was about animal bones and feathers. The students had the opportunity to feel how heavy the giraffe’s leg bones are. It was a lot of fun!

In Maths this week, we are revisiting place value. The students have started using MAB blocks, and they were exploring place value through making pictures with MABs. They then added up how many ones, tens and hundreds they have used.
