Intermediate Regional Basketball
Last Thursday, 10 of our students travelled to Greensborough Hockey Centre. With 11 players in a Hockey team we were one player short all day. I also discovered only 2 of our students played club Hockey and the other 8 had never played before.
We started the day playing Hume Anglican College. Although we lacked experience, skills and understanding of the rules, we did well to only lose 2-0. Our students were running hard, pressuring their opponents and giving their all. In games two and three we negated our opponents (Hazel Glen and Princes Hill) and drew both games 0-0. We were showing improvement and our skills and knowledge of the rules were becoming evident.
Playing Montmorency in the last game our students were determined to score a goal. After an unlucky deflection rolled into their goal, we went in at half time down 1-0. Our students lifted and had a dominant second half. Our midfielders and forwards kept attacking strongly and eventually Gurshaan Cheema scored our first goal. The wild celebrations of our whole team was confirmation of their effort and determination to learn and improve. We finished our fourth game 1-1, our third draw for the day.
A big thank you to Year 10 students Archie Newnham and Orlando Bruzzaniti who coached, explained and helped our Year 8 students progress in their Hockey development. Our goalkeeper Benjamin Hodkinson who volunteered for the role saved numerous goals and did a great job only letting in 3 goals over our 4 games.

The Year 9 and 10 girls headed out to Regional Hockey on 11 October, and the majority of the team had never played hockey in their life, but they were full of optimism and energy from the start. Unfortunately they girls lost 3-0 in their first game against MGC. It was a closer game against Montmorency, only conceding 1 goal. In the last game we drew 0-0 with Diamond Valley. Even though the girls didn't score a goal all day, the skill level noticeably improved throughout the day, with some stand out performances from them all. A special mention to Jada for volunteering to be goalie for the day. The girls should be commended for their 'never give up' attitude the entire day.

On Friday the 13th of October both 9/10 Intermediate teams descended on JC Donath reserve. With the clouds darkening and the wind picking up it was straight into the first round match ups of our regional competition. The winner would progress to the state quarter finals in Bendigo. The girls won convincingly only loosing 1 wicket to amass a score of 71 runs, Indigo and Jada putting on a partnership of 55 runs.
The boys narrowly lost their first game to Hume by 4 runs with a tense last over. The boys went straight back in and won convincingly against Princes Hill, but due to earlier loss were not able to progress to the final.
The girls had a break and then were up against MGC needing a win to progress to state. Our opening partnership again fired putting on 80 for no loss of wicket. The rain played its role but MGC were not able to get going losing constant wickets to come up 50 runs short. Next stop Bendigo and the State finals!

Our Year 10 students recently competed in the Northern Region Final for Table Tennis, coming up against University High, Viewbank and Hume in our pool.
We defeated Hume six rubbers to five. The match against Viewbank was very tight. Both schools won three rubbers but Northcote won ten games versus Viewbank’s nine. Viewbank actually won more points than Northcote (161 to 159) but the winner is determined by games won.
We then faced University High, who had also defeated Hume and Viewbank. Unfortunately they were too strong for us and won all six rubbers.
All five students competed well and played in a good spirit.

Last Thursday, on October 19th, the Year 8 table tennis squad headed to regionals, ready for the next chapter of the competition. Things kicked off on a high note with Northcote thrashing Hume High School with a clean sweep of 6-0 games. Next up, we faced Eltham, and the winning trend continued with another 6-0 victory. Special mention to Asher and Clancy for nailing a tight doubles match. Then came the showdown against University High, where both teams were unbeaten so far. The game began with strong performances from Asher and Hamish, followed by a win from Leon. When the dust settled on the doubles matches, we came out on top with a 5-1 game score. With our pool conquered, we geared up for a challenging match against Gilson, our toughest rivals yet. We had history from last year's semi-final, and we knew it wouldn't be a cakewalk. The singles matches ended in a deadlock at 2-2, setting the stage for an intense doubles showdown. We lost the first doubles match by a hair's breadth, making it all come down to Leon and Hamish. The decisive final game was a nail-biter, but Leon and Hamish powered through and clinched the win. Their victory not only sealed the match but also gave us a shot at winning the day based on sets won. In those heart-pounding moments, we emerged victorious, clinching the win by just three sets. With this hard-earned win, our boys have booked a ticket to the upcoming state competition. The day was filled with excitement and camaraderie, and a big shoutout goes to Mr. Ghafari for being our awesome guide and supporter throughout the day.
~Isaac Bartely Year 11
We would love to thank Isaac for all of his coaching and assistance with Table Tennis at NHS. He seems to have passed the baton onto his brother Asher, who has been helping with the younger year levels and we are hoping Asher continues to do this over the next few years.
Congratulations to our Intermediate Basketball teams who recently competed in the Regional Competition. Both our Boys and Girls teams combined well and had some competitive matches. Thanks to Ex Student Mitch Lester for coaching on the day, and thanks also to Visual Arts teacher Nick Cooke for the great action shots.
Our Year 7 cricket day was filled with good weather and a fun time for our boys. Unfortunately, we came up short in all of our games but the boys showed great spirit and character. The team worked well together to try and give a fair go to everyone. The year 7s showed great determination and I am sure they will be back out there next year smashing 6s. Special thanks to Finbar Kennedy and Jay Ryan who came along as scores and coaches for the day.

Game One vs Hume – Won by 9 wickets
Some early key wickets put NHS on top against the team that made it through to state final last year. Their score was restricted to 59 off 9 overs. Harry Marr(37*) and Jack Newman batted patiently early and were 0-12 off 3 before peeling off almost 50 in the next 4 overs to get an early % boosting win.
Game Two vs Brunswick Secondary
NHS batted first and scored a fantastic 96 off their 12 overs. Harry and Jack started exceptionally well again before most of the boys that wanted a bat got a bat. Brunswick had one exceptional batsman put together the best innings of the day to have them 61 after 6 overs but some pressure fielding and tight bowling kept him at one end unable to get on strike which made the required run rate climb late on.
An enjoyable day and everyone got a go at some stage. The boys will now play the winner of the other pool to compete to be Regional Champions.
On Monday 16th October the State Athletics Championships were held at Albert Park. To qualify to compete at this level is an outstanding achievement. We had the following 6 students qualify for State Athletics
Wolfgang Curry – Hurdles, Triple Jump and 400m
Yahia Eissa – 1500m Walk
Thomas Follis Kirby – 100m and 200m
Amira Tabit – 800m and 1500m
Niamh Tabit – 3000m and 1500m
Sophia Xintaropoulos – Shot Put
This was the last State Athletics For our Year 12 students Niamh and Amira Tabit. The girls have both achieved outstanding results in both Athletics and Cross Country throughout their years at NHS. Both have qualified to compete at State Aths every year and multiple times for Cross Country. Unfortunately, due to injury Amira was unable to run on Monday but was there to support her sister Niamh in the 1500m where she had a good race and came in second. Niamh decided not to run the 3000m which was earlier in the day due to school commitments. We would like to congratulate Niamh and Amira and thank them for their outstanding commitment to sport at Northcote and wish them well. Keep on running!
Thomas Follis Kirby and Wolfang Curry had some fantastic results with Thomas blazing his way through his 100m and 200m races, coming first in both races, pretty sure he would have also smashed his PBs as well.
Competing in 3 events Wolfgang came 4th in Triple jump, he came 2nd in Hurdles and came home in a close battle to get 1st place in his 400m.
Congratulations to all of our Students who competed at this level, it was great to see parents and grandparents there to support.
The year 8 boys basketball team put on a strong performance at the regional tournament on Thursday, October 19th. After winning all three of their pool games comfortably, against Hume, Greensborough and Brunswick the boys came up against Saint Helena in the final to get through to State. Although Saint Helena were drained from their previous game, we knew it was still going to be a challenge. The boys did super well and, in the end, brought home the win, with the final scores being 36 - 28. All of the boys put in their best efforts for the team and carried themselves well throughout the day.
-Phoebe Hargreaves
A Big thank you to our Student Coaches -Zoe Panagiotopoulos, Phoebe Hargreaves. Scorer- Finnley Stoilkovski. The team now progresses through to State Finals Nov 13.
