Hello Aitken Hill Primary!
Over the coming weeks, students will be bringing home their beautiful artwork creations. We hope that families can share in the joy and creativity by asking students about the processes behind each piece and what they enjoyed doing the most. Reflection and evaluation is an important part of learning and showing interest in their work helps with overall engagement at school.

1/2 COMMUNITY
The 1/2 communities have continued exploring sculpture in its many forms and are currently moving from painting their Paper Magiclay mer-animals to Air Drying Modelling Clay, designing their own imaginary mythical creatures and bringing them to life through this 3D medium.
Mina in 1/2L had this to say about our current Sculpture unit: “In Art we get to share our creativity. I really enjoyed painting my clay mer-animal and I enjoyed designing my own imaginary creature. -Mina
Icarus & Apollo Communities (34s)
The students of the Year 3/4 Communities have continued their exploration of food in art, this time focusing on using paper to create 3D works, in the form of paper quilling. Paper quilling is an artform that is said to have evolved at the same time as the invention of paper! It involves using strips of paper that are rolled, shaped and glued together to create decorative designs. Students examined the stunning art created by Yulia Brodskaya, before embarking on their own experimentation with quilling to create images of different foods. Whilst most of the Year 3&4’s have enjoyed the task, during our reflections they have also acknowledge the challenges they have experienced along the way:
“Paper quilling is hard because it’s hard to take the paper out of the tool. I overcame this by doing it looser”. – Subira
Some students followed on by adding that they didn’t like this though because they wanted their pieces to be smaller, demonstrating the further difficulties of the task! By wrapping the paper looser, they made bigger pieces, showing you how much patience has been required by students to achieve their artworks.
On a similar note, Geradius expressed “paper quilling can be frustrating because when you roll the paper up it can go everywhere, and then you have to do it again!”
Whereas Maddie “like(s) paper quilling because it’s amazing how you can make the paper into different shapes no matter how big” and Azal said he likes “How paper quilling makes it 3D”!
Paper quilling is quite intricate, but has been rewarding and students have shown amazing results with their work. While currently a work in progress, they are enjoying how their artworks are beginning to appear and looking forward to taking the finished pieces home to share!
Monarch Community (5/6s)
November has seen the Monarch Community finalise their painted, acetate self-portraits. The vibrate portraits are on display in the art room, and demonstrate the unique individuality of each student, with no two portraits looking alike in colour scheme or emphasis of features. They explored contrasts in their colour schemes, to create an artwork that stands out and draws the eye of the audience. This was evident by the number of students’ complimenting their work, with the younger students asking when they get to make one! It was great to see students comparing their work with others and giving each other positive feedback. We really enjoy seeing students’ happy faces as they view their work on display. The joy of their efforts and sharing their artwork with an audience is what art is all about!
ZART STUDENT ART COMPETITION!
There is still a little bit of time to add your entries to the Zart Student Art Competition. There are some fantastic prizes! This year it’s Post Card Art. The size of the art needs to be A6, but the theme can be anything, so it’s a great opportunity to get creative! Students interested in entering the competition can find more information by clicking the image below. If you need any support entering your artwork, we will be happy to help, just ask!
We are always extremely proud of Aitken Hill students' creativity and expression through artwork and can't wait to see their finished pieces.
Thank you,
Carly, Suzie & Chloe
