USA Study Opportunity 2025

The opportunity

We are excited to announce that we are seeking initial (non-binding) Expressions of Interest (EOIs) from All Saints’ College families with children who will be 12–14 years of age as of July 2025 to attend the NuVu Summer Program in Boston!

About NuVu

NuVu Innovation School is located in Cambridge, Boston, halfway between (and easy walking distance to) Harvard University and MIT. It is a micro-school for secondary students keen to find creative solutions to real-world problems. Our Principal, Ms Belinda Provis, has developed long-term relationships with the founders of NuVu and has visited there several times over the past decade.

For students with a passion for entrepreneurialism and innovation, NuVu’s Summer Studios are ten-day programs where students they work in open-ended environments to bring to life solutions to real-world problems. There will be up to three Studios from which students can choose, the nature of each Studio being determined according to student interest via a brief survey of those attending.

(For information, some of NuVu’s Studios for 2024 include Games from the Future, 3D Printed Food, Exploration Rovers,  Devices for Activism, AI Intelligent Ecologies, Health Wearable Devices, Responsive Architecture, Hacking Drones, Urban Motion Marvels and Battlebotics, these topics having been custom-designed to meet the interests of NuVu’s 2024 cohort.)

When?

If there is interest, the All Saints’ NuVu Experience will see students travelling to the US with ASC staff over the July 2025 school holidays. In addition to attending a NuVu Studio, students will have the opportunity to engage in some popular tourist activities in and around Boston including, hopefully, visits to Harvard University, MIT and the nearby town of Salem.

Likely cost?

While we are yet to confirm the final costing (and that will be impacted by the size of our party), to help in your decision-making we can advise that the two-week Studio experience (including daily lunches) will be about $2000US, and that nearby accommodation is likely to be in the vicinity of $300US/night for a share room. Additional to that, of course, are airfares and spending money for other meals, sight-seeing and so on.

While we appreciate it is costly to travel to the US, we do feel this is a wonderful and unique opportunity for this age group of students, should they be interested and should this be possible for your family.

We were in the midst of calling for EOIs for a similar NuVu opportunity in 2019...and then COVID hit! We are, therefore, very pleased to be able to revisit this initiative if there is interest in our community.

What next?

If this is of interest to you and your young person, please complete the following form by Monday 18 November (noting, as mentioned, that your EOI does not commit you to this trip). After ascertaining the level of interest for this opportunity, we will be back in touch with you.

Any queries?

Please contact Director of Senior School (Teaching and Learning), Shannon Armitage.

Examinations

Year 12 examinations

Our Year 12 Students commence the three weeks of WACE Written Exams on Monday 28 October. These exams contribute 50% of the total score towards the calculation of the ATAR for a student, so are an important part of their journey through education. Parents are reminded that the start and finish times are different for WACE exams than for our College Exams. The morning sessions commence at 9.20am and the afternoon sessions commence at 2.00pm. Students are expected to be at the examination venue (near the ISC Carpark) at least 30 minutes prior to the examination start time. They need their personal examination timetable and photo ID (preferably driver’s licence or student ID card).

The Year 12 2024 ATAR course examination timetables are available on the SCSA website and can be accessed here.

Personalised examination timetables are available through the SCSA Student portal.

Sickness and/or Misadventure

Should students become unwell during the exam period, is it is recommended that they commence a “Sickness and/or Misadventure” application and have the relevant section completed by their medical practitioner. The form is available here.  Please take note that these forms must be submitted directly to SCSA from the student and cannot be processed through the College.  Please contact Mr Shackleton if you have any questions regarding this.

Year 11 Examinations

Year 11 Examinations commence on Monday 4 November.  Students and families are reminded that the morning sessions start at 8.30am and the afternoon sessions at 1.00pm.  Students are expected to be at the examination venue (at the front of L Block) at least 15 minutes prior to the examination start time.  The examination timetable is available here.

NEXUS-S for Study

Students on study break for exams are welcome to use Nexus-S as a study facility.  Students are asked to ensure that they are dressed in College uniform and follow the normal grooming guidelines whilst on Campus.  It is requested that they sign in and out of Nexus-S during this period so that the College has a record of who is on site.  During this time, students in Years 11 and 12 may arrive and depart as required.

Course Confirmations 2025

Students in Years 11 and 12 in 2025 have been sent their course confirmations for next year. Please contact Mr Shackleton directly if changes are desired, but note that course changes are subject to availability and are limited.

For students in Years 11 and 12 in 2025, full year course changes cannot be made after the end of Week 3, Term 1 2025.

Students in Years 9 and 10 (2025) will receive their course confirmations later in Term 4.  A strict process for seeking changes to elective subjects will be advised at that time, and changes will be able to be made at the commencement of Term 1 next year.

TEACHING AND LEARNING POLICIES

All school policies and procedures including the current Senior School Assessment Policies can be found here or on MyASC.

Rising Scholar Program

Curtin University is again running the Innovative Schools Scholars Program, relaunched as the Rising Scholar Program (RSP) commencing in Semester 1 2025.

The RSP offers students the tertiary learning experience at Curtin University while still in high school, allowing them to earn University credit.  Students will engage with staff and students through any of the available delivery modes of the University (on-campus, blended learning, or online). The program will consider outstanding Year 10, 11 or 12 students for one unit per semester, and they may complete up to 4 units over the course of the program. Students will be granted a full fee sponsorship for the cost of the units (some unit resource costs may apply).   Units available to study include, to name just a few, Business & Law, Humanities, Health Sciences and Science & Engineering.

Successful completion of units through the program may be credited towards an undergraduate degree; however, students will need to seek eligibility regarding CRL. Students will receive a Curtin Certificate upon successful completion of an RSP unit.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Students should be clearly aware of the additional workload associated with these courses and note that changes cannot be made to the ASC timetable to accommodate this.

Further information regarding the program can be found on the RSP page on MyASC.
