Year 3 News

You Yangs Regional Park

On Thursday the 24th of October our wonderful group of Year 3 students left Newport Lakes headed for You Yangs Regional Park. Students were treated to a scenic bus trip where they spotted a variety of animals on small farms, including sheep (with newly arrived lambs), cows, horses, llamas, and chickens.

As we neared the Park, the You Yangs terrain came into view and you could feel the excitement build. The high rocky terrain of the distinctive granite peaks of the park rose from the flat plains. Getting off the bus we were greeted with the smell of clean crisp air, a mix of native shrubs and gum trees and a fresh morning breeze.

After climbing the hill to the picnic area, we were kindly welcomed by Ebonee, a proud Wadawurrung woman, Community Engagement Ranger in Wurdi/YouYangs Regional Park, who was to be our guide for the day. Her knowledge and understanding of the Geographical landscapes of the You Yangs and the Wadawurrung people, as the Traditional Owners of the lands and waters of You Yangs Regional Park, helped us recognise their history, continuing connection and their ongoing role in caring for Country.

"We went on a long walk and treasure hunt along one of the paths. I enjoyed being outside in nature and jumping on the big rocks around the park."  -  Raf

"I enjoyed walking with the ranger and learning about how Aboriginal people made clothes out of possum fur and how they added lots of skins each year to form a larger coat."  -  Matilda

Year 4 News

Scienceworks

On Thursday the 31st of October the year fours had an exciting excursion to Scienceworks. When they arrived they went to an incredible lighting show in a lightning theatre, and saw how energy and force create lightning. Afterwards they went inside and explored all the different inventions and games. They went into the sports centre and raced against their peers and teachers. While they also went and explored and played in the beyond perception. The students found a discovery when two black holes collide they create a gravitational wave. When the time came to an end, they exited through the doors of Scienceworks, and entered the bus back to school. Overall we had an incredibly fun experience.

Forces

Year 4 classes have been investigating forces.

Last week we investigated air resistance using crushed up and flat sheets of paper. We also compared the difference between a table tennis ball and a basketball. We dropped these items from the upstairs portable while a friend recorded the process on an iPad.

Just like a parachute opens to slow down a sky diver’s fall to the ground, the flat piece of paper traps air below its surface. This force is called drag resistance or air resistance; it works against the pull of the Earth’s gravity by pushing up on the object in the opposite direction.

Year 5/6 News

Lawn Bowls with David Moss at Newport Bowls Club

Lawn bowls is a fun social sport and 20 of the Year 5/6 girls got randomly selected out of a hat to go play the sport. The dates for it were Wednesday the 30th October and Friday the 20th November. We got to do it because our old principal David wanted to teach us a fun and social sport. We played it at the Newport Bowls Club and had a great time with David. We had groups of 5-6 and each had an individual teacher and they taught us how to roll the bowls and how to hold them. Overall, it was a very fun and educational experience. We really enjoyed it.

Billy Cart Incursion

On the 23rd of October, Year 5/6 students took part in a Billy Cart Incursion. A billy cart is a popular Australian vehicle that is powered by gravity. In this incursion we did many exciting and challenging activities. That included building life sized models of billy carts, using small parts to make our own new designs, and even riding billy carts. Overall it was an awesome experience and we all had so much fun learning about billy carts.

PE/Sports News

Melbourne Victory School of Football Program

During Semester Two, sixteen of our Grade 5 and 6 students have spent an hour each Friday participating in a football (soccer) program run by an accredited coach from Melbourne Victory, one of Australia’s biggest clubs.

The program looks to build not only the technical and tactical aspects of the game, but also to foster important life skills such as teamwork, discipline and leadership. It has been extremely rewarding to see the students continue to develop and grow into well-rounded, capable and confident students throughout the program which has been a wonderful addition to our extracurricular offerings.

The students look forward to the next few weeks of the program which will conclude on December 13th.
