Auslan Report
During this fortnight in Auslan, students will be learning the new topics: Meal Times and Time. When learning about Meal Times the signs that will be taught are: Breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, dessert, snack, eat, drink, knife, fork, spoon, plate and bowl. Activities will include learning the Mealtime Poem and students drawing a picture of what their breakfast looks like so they may learn the Auslan signs for the food they eat. It is important that they include cutlery so they can practise signing words such as knife, fork, spoon and plate. Grade 1 and 2 students will draw their lunch box with their favourite foods and finger spell their favourite lunch item and drink. Students in Grade 3 and 4 will do a similar activity by practising the signs and drawing their favourite breakfast. This activity will also encourage finger spelling. Grade 5 and 6 students will communicate in Auslan in front of class members about their favourite meals. They will also do a question and answer activity where students will ask and answer questions about their favourite meals.
When learning about Times, students will learn the words: Today, tomorrow, yesterday, morning, afternoon, night, day, before and after. Students will learn the ‘Time’ Song and the teacher will support the activity by making a sign of a time, for example, Morning and then relate an activity to that time which can be brushing teeth. Students will participate in the activity and revise their learning of Days of the Week. Grade 1 and 2 students will be extended in this activity by doing constructed action more independently when referring to the class calendar, picking a time of day and actioning an activity related to that specific time. Grade 3 and 4 students will be required to tell a story in Auslan regarding an activity related to the days of the week and class calendar. Grade 5 and 6 students will be challenged in their learning in this activity by communicating a story with a before and after structure and using sentence starters in Auslan, for example; “Yesterday I …… “
As our students build their repertoire of words, engage in conversations and enjoy practising signs together as learnt by our students! Please scan the QR Code below which will provide you with YouTube videos to assist in practising together at home.

POEM:
What's your favourite Mealtime?
I will tell you mine
I like morning breakfast
When I wake up feeling fine!
What's your favourite Mealtime?
You can tell me yours
Is it Lunch or is it Dinner?
Or is it Dessert, that you want MORE!
Kind Regards
Jess Pfister
