Learning Diversity & Wellbeing

As we continue to refine our practice each level of the school has taken on a suggested area from our Berry Street Education model training. In the Junior school the focus has been keeping students engaged in their learning with regular ‘Brain Breaks’. Brain breaks are an activity that takes you away from hard mental work and allows your brain and body to reset.
In the middle school the Year ¾ students have focussed on the welcome circle where we use a positive primer to encourage the flow of positive emotions. When students make the transition into the classroom at the start of the day or from recess or lunchtime, students join together in a circle and through this process students are guided to build connections with one another, a sense of belonging and inner peace.
In the senior school the Year ⅚ students have focussed on the ready to learn scale; through this students can identify difficult emotions or stress, both collectively and individually that can impact their ability to learn and interact positively with others. Here is the ready-to-learn scale used in the Year ⅚ classes and the Year ⅚ preparing for their learning.
The Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) expectations that students have learnt over the past three weeks are the following:
- I am Sunsmart
- I wear the school uniform correctly
- I am honest and accountable for my actions
The important details from the lessons were:
I am Sunsmart
- Wearing your hat in Term 1 and 4 protects you from the sun.
- Due to its geographical location and close proximity to the equator, Australia experiences some of the highest levels of UV in the world.
- Being Sunsmart helps to protect us from the harmful UV rays the sun omits.
I wear the school uniform correctly
- Wearing our uniform correctly is important as it shows respect and pride for our school.
- Our uniform makes us identifiable from other schools when representing the school.
- Wearing our uniform is important, as many jobs when we are older will require a dress code or a uniform.
I am honest and accountable for my actions
- If we are honest, we can maintain good relationships
- When we are responsible for our own actions, people will trust us more.
- When we own up to our mistakes, people can help us not to make those mistakes again.
Please continue to check in with your child and ask them about the weekly PBL lesson and what the behaviour expectation is you can also support them to provide reminders about wearing the uniform correctly and being sunsmart.
Physical Education
On 9th October Odeleyah, Daniel D, Benito, Kintan and Viraj participated in the SSV Monash Waverley Division Track and Field competition. This level of competition is tough as only the top two athletes of each event progress through from the previous level, so it’s basically the best of the best! All our students gave it their best and represented St Peter’s and Monash District with pride.
To progress through to the next level, again you need to place 1st or 2nd in your event; Benito and Odeleyah both progressed through to the Regional Level which was held yesterday in Doncaster. Benito placed 5th in the Triple Jump and Odeleyah placed 6th in the Shot Put. Congratulations to both of you, we are all extremely proud of your achievement!
