As students start the process of thinking forward to Year 10, it's a crucial time to set the tone for their educational journey. In our assembly we touched on some information for Year 10 that we feel may be useful for the students to start thinking about. This year marks the transition from general studies to more specialised subjects, and the choices made now can influence not only their final years of schooling but also their pathways beyond.
Students have been provided with a form to select their subjects for Year 10. To assist students and families with choosing their subjects please refer to the subject handbooks using the link below.
We also got the opportunity to award some of our students for their achievements in Athletics age group champions.
A new elective has been added to the subject list for Year 10 in 2026, Scale Motorsports. Students in the current Year 10 Automotive class have participated in a trial of the program with great success. The subject gives students a hands-on opportunity to explore real-world engineering systems through the design, tuning, and testing of 1/8 scale nitro and electric vehicles. It supports the core aims of Design and Technology by promoting problem-solving, prototyping, data analysis, and iterative design.
On Tuesday 20th May, Bairnsdale Secondary College Year 9 students faced off with Orbost Secondary College in a game of footy just for fun. It was a cold morning, but the boys were all warmed up quite quickly from playing footy. In the first quarter Orbost was in the lead by 36 points scoring a total of seven goals. In the second quarter the school bell went for first break, students came out to watch the game and it felt like most of the school came out to watch the boys play. Students were cheering and the motivation helped.
During the second quarter, Orbost scored 2 goals and 6 points taking their score up to 60, whilst Bairnsdale scored 2 goals and 1 point taking Bairnsdale’s score up to 19. The bell rang again to end break time, and all the spectators went back to their classes. Quarter three was Bairnsdale’s best quarter of the game kicking 4 goals and taking their score to 43, Orbost only kicking 2 taking their score up to 72. The fourth quarter came up so fast, but Bairnsdale couldn’t quite catch up to Orbost by only kicking a goal and 3 points taking their overall score to 52. Orbost kicked 2 goals and 3 points in the final quarter taking their overall points to 87. The final score was 52-87 with Orbost winning by 35 points.
Overall, it was a fun game, and we thank Orbost Secondary for coming down to have a match with the boys.
The After-game recovery - The Year 9 boys went over to the BARC in the final session to recover their muscles in a relaxing chilled swimming session.

On Thursday 22nd May we had the opportunity to go to Sale and represent Bairnsdale Secondary College, to play three, 24-minute games with 12-minute halves of Girls AFL in the next level of competition. It was a rocky start at first, having multiple girls drop out and having to find at least 3 girls to fill in 5 minutes before we had to leave. There were a lot of nerves coming from everyone in the group but the excitement we all felt overruled them.
We went into the day expecting to not have a great outcome, but in the end all the effort we put in paid off as we won 2 out of our 3 games as well as coming runners-up in the age category. The score for our first game against Bass Coast College was 7 to 22, our second game against Lowanna College being the game we lost, our score was 17 to 6, our third game was a close one, but we pushed through our loss and won against Sale Catholic College with the score being 7 to 17. It started off as a cold foggy morning turning into a wet rainy day. The ball was slippery, and the ground was wet but despite the conditions we gave it our all and kept a positive mindset throughout the day.
At the end of the day there were a few sore bodies but a lot of smiling faces and happy girls. All of us girls are very proud of our efforts and achievements and are very thankful to the teachers who took time out of their day to help coach us and organised for us to have the opportunity to go.

As a way to finalise the students first aid unit, we had a visit from Ambulance Victoria. The session covered topics such as DRSABCD, what happens when you dial 000, how a defibrillator works, how to use it and where one is located in the school.
Students performed CPR on manikins as part of a training scenario. We were very lucky to have a fully operational ambulance for the session which enabled us to see some specialist equipment such as an automatic CPR machine known as the corpuls and various vacuum splints.
Overall, students enjoyed the hands-on experience, got an insight into paramedicine, raised their community awareness and some even had an opportunity to chat with the paramedic about future career pathways.
Hard at work! Our Year 9 students have been putting in their all to make these beautiful coffee tables. From selecting materials to applying the final finishing touches, they've poured their creativity and effort into every step. These tables are a true reflection of their hard work, attention to detail, and passion for design.
The Year 9 students made Crispy Spring Rolls in preparation for their Asian Buffet assessment. They enjoyed learning about the folding techniques and all the authentic ingredients for the spring rolls and for the dipping sauce.
