Yr 4 Incursion at the National Portrait Gallery
Term 2 Week 8
Students in both Year 4 classes have been learning about drawing techniques, such as tone and line techniques. Students have been drawing 3D images, like a door, to imagine the verse from Revelation 3:20: "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me."
Today, students in 4F experienced an incursion to the National Portrait Gallery via zoom where we discovered art from their collection (4H is to experience this incursion within the next fortnight).
This incursion was titled: My Awesome Australian. Students were guided in creative activities, exploring remarkable individuals from the National Portrait Gallery collection. Through engaging discussions and drawing exercises, we examined portraits of significant Australians, past and present. We reflected on someone we believed deserves recognition for their contribution to the community.
Students discussed the importance of acknowledging people contributing to the community, examined notable Australian portraits, and planned a portrait of a community contributor. Students will also write a statement about what the person means to them and the award they think the person deserves. As part of this unit, students are encouraged to bring a photo of someone close to them whom they would like to acknowledge in art. This could be a Mum, Dad, precious family friend, or relative. One student from 4F drew one of his past teachers.
We aim to enter our images into the National Portrait Gallery for the online gallery by September 2025. For more information, you can view the National Portrait gallery at https://www.portrait.gov.au/calendar/my-awesome-australian-upper-primary/3145
Students in Stage 2 (Year 3-4) will attend the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery, which includes the National Glass Gallery, in Term 3 as a real event. We are very blessed to have the National Glass Gallery in Wagga Wagga.
