What are we learning in the Art Room?

Foundation

Foundation students are creating artworks with their favourite colour. They have explored the element of line and been practicing drawing and naming different line styles. Students have been introduced to new vocabulary with words such as zig zag, wavy, bumpy, spiral, dotted, dashed and loopy when describing lines. They had fun making crayon characters and worked on their fine motor skills when drawing with paint sticks.

Year 1 & 2

Year 1 & 2 students have been learning how artists use lines in their work. They have identified how lines can run in three different directions, horizontal, vertical and diagonal. Students then created some amazing line work by drawing tropical fish and used oil pastels to create a watercolour resist background.

Year 3 & 4

The Year 3 & 4 students have completed their monochromatic landscape paintings and learned how to paint gum trees using texture brushes. They have consolidated their learning about tints and shades by mixing their own paint colours for their landscapes. Students have now begun working on their sculpture unit. They have taken inspiration from the work they viewed by Yayoi Kusama at NGV to build an enchanted garden. Each student is using a variety of materials such as cardboard, wire, polystyrene and clay to construct a flower. Over the coming weeks they will paint and decorate their flower in a style inspired by Kusama.

Year 5 & 6

The Year 5 & 6 students are learning about reconciliation and how to build art collaboratively. Each class is working on a piece that represents the Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags. They have used their knowledge about pixel art to make a paper chain quilt. Each student is responsible for creating one piece of the flag and these will be joined to create one large collaborative artwork. They are very excited to see how the final work will look and how it will support their learning during reconciliation week.
