Grade 5/6 News

Hello Grade 5/6 families!

Students have been working very hard over the last few weeks and we are excited to share with you all of the amazing things that they have been learning.

In Literacy, students have continued to explore how suffixes are used to build words. We have looked at the suffixes -ist & -ion and learnt the meaning of words including orthodontist, chemist, condition and companion, as well as how to spell them. 

In Writing, students have been learning how to create a 'suspense tale' using 'The Nightmare Man' as their modelled text. Students have learnt how to use a variety of writing tools to add greater detail and strengthen their writing, including: 

1. Show how characters feel by what they do, think or say
2. Use the narrator's comments to suggest the character's feelings
3. The rule of 3
4. Personification

In Maths, students in Grade 5 have been strengthening their understanding of multiplication and division using a range of strategies including vertical multiplication, the area model and short/long division. In Grade 6, students have begun exploring fractions including fractions of a whole, like and related fractions, and mixed fractions. 

In Literature, we have begun our exciting new unit on the text 'I Am Malala'. This memoir recounts the journey of Malala Yousafzai, from a young girl living in the Swat Valley in Pakistan to an international advocate for female education. Students have been exploring the themes of war, education and equality by analysing Malala's experiences.
