Year 9 Lead - Passion Projects

Year 9 LEAD – Passion Projects

During Semester 1 this year, all Year 9 students worked on their chosen Passion Project.

A culmination of 3-years of Passion Project work, these students spent time executing their plans and aiming to make a positive different to their community. A big thank you to all students and teachers who navigated the applied learning classroom environment and came up with tangible ways to improve our school and community.

Below are some examples.

How can we better incorporate our school values and showcase pride through our interschool sports uniform?

Audited the current sport uniform

  • Created designs for future uniform
  • Looked at potential fundraises (this was a barrier as the fundraiser we wanted to do was too expensive)
  • Created a proposal for Ms Grimes and school council
  • Wrote a letter to Education Minister requesting support to get new sport uniform

How can we increase awareness and provide meaningful support for people experiencing homelessness in our community?

  • Groups identified charity they wanted to support.
  • Contacted the charities to confirm what they needed in terms of donations.
  • Organised donation boxes and advertised donation drives at school using posters and social media.
  • Collected and sorted their donations.
  • Delivered the donations to their chosen charity.

Throughout the process, students discovered the importance of teamwork, time management, and precision in baking. They explored various techniques for dough preparation, flavour balancing, and creative presentation. Along the way, they crafted beautiful baked goods that were both visually appealing and delicious, showcasing their growing confidence in the kitchen.

How can we promote access to sporting activities for all people within our community?

A benefit to improving our courts for disability, is we can see a more diverse range of people playing basketball this could be including wheelchair basketball.

It paints a better image for the school. Seeing that we take these things into consideration is important for how new students/teachers see us as well as the government and citizens.

We could create one project as an entire class or we could work in smaller groups to create multiple projects. The main points are:

  • You will make a documentary style film
  • The film will be about performing arts in some respect
  • Answer the question: “How does Performing Arts benefit our community?”

The group decided that to best demonstrate the power of the performing arts, they should put on a show, and we should make the documentary about making that show. So that's what we did. The students worked in groups to come up with short acts that we could put into a short performance and then we performed these to an audience. All the while we were filming the process and edited together a fun and engaging documentary of the process.

How can we use street art to communicate who we are as a collective?

Students developed skills such as using the design process to collaboratively work through our question for enquiry.  This included brainstorming ideas, surveying student's opinions, researching inspiration and concept development.  Students also developed skills around pitching an idea and then taking an idea and turning it into a resolved mural.  This included presentation development, scaling up our chosen design using a grid system and learning how to use painting techniques to refine our design.

How can we promote mental resilience through physical activity in the school community?

Point of project was to design a program that could promote resilience through physical activity. Ideally if this was well designed and ran well, could be run with Year 7s to promote resilience and teamwork.

How can we promote mindfulness and raise awareness of mental health to our community?

Just like you’d build worlds in Minecraft, Mind-Craft is about creating something even more important—our mental well-being. Through fun, creative projects and mindfulness activities, we’ll investigate ways to craft stronger, calmer, and more confident versions of ourselves.
