Year 4/5's St John's Taster Day

Year 4 & 5’s St John’s Taster Day

On Monday 2nd June the grade 4/5's went to St John’s for a taster day. We did 4 activities: Science, HPE (Health and PE), Materials Tech and Food Tech.

Science

In the science lab we wore a lab coat and goggles for safety reasons. We watched the teacher make elephant toothpaste and we touched a static ball. It was really cool. When I had my hair next to the ball it went crazy, it was everywhere! We did an experiment called “Quake and Bake”. We took conical flasks and poured some vinegar, food dye, dish soap and bi-carb soda in. When we mixed it together it all foamed up and made gas.

HPE

For HPE we did some activity rotations. These were: bowling, target throw, coits, beanbag toss, basket goals, hockey dribble, balance walk, keepy uppy, rebound net and mini hurdles. Keepy uppy was the best activity because that was the one you could get the most points in. We had to throw the ball quickly from person to person and count the catches.

Materials Tech

I liked the wood tech session because we made St John’s name tags and we saw the work that the students did using 3D printing. We saw a giant laser cutter cut out Diana’s name tag.

Food Tech

In Food Tech we went to high school cooking class. We made yummy chicken pasties that tasted amazing. We used lots of different ingredients such as peas, corn, carrots, chicken, sour cream, cheese and mustard.
