Year 9 English

This term Year 9 students have been studying Shakespeare's most famous play; 'Romeo & Juliet'. Students have been tackling this tragedy in a variety of ways, as they endeavour to get comfortable with the Bard's language, and explore one of history's most famous love stories.

While studying Shakespeare is never easy, it is an important undertaking that allows students to appreciate an entirely different world. They piece together what life was like 400 years ago; how society functioned in a feudal monarchy, drastically different gender roles and expectations, and other elements that are starkly contrasted to their own lives. Studying Shakespeare also allows them to understand themes that are universal, regardless of time and society, and how our own lives can still bear connection to those who lives centuries ago.

Year 9 reimagined one of Shakespeare's most famous scenes; the balcony scene in which Romeo and Juliet declare their love. Students turned the grounds of Kellyville High School into our own Globe Theatre, as they embodied the star-crossed lovers to bring the scene to life.
