Environmental Leadership in Action 🌱

It’s only Week 2 of Term 3, but the Brentwood Green Team is already making waves across the community with three major initiatives that showcased environmental leadership, teamwork, and forward-thinking action, all completed last week.

Environmental Forum – Collaboration for a Greener Future

On Wednesday, 23rd of July, the Green Team hosted the highly anticipated Environmental Forum, bringing together schools from our network—including Wellington Secondary College, Mount Waverley Secondary College, and new participant Ashwood High School. Students exchanged ideas on effective waste management strategies, learning from each other’s initiatives.

Brentwood Secondary College, drawing on years of environmental experience, shared practical recommendations: how to implement effective bin systems, use duty and rubbish monitors, improve school-wide communication, and connect with local organisations like Rotary and Landcare. We were also honoured to welcome Celina Samarakoon from the City of Monash, who delivered an insightful presentation on waste disposal and sustainable practices.

Special thanks to Katie Lim (2Y3), Daniel Wojak (0E1), and Aiden Shamgar (OG1) for organising such a productive and engaging event.

Scotchman Creek Planting Day – 1,500 Plants in 4 Hours!

The following day, Thursday 24th of July, a team of 15 passionate Green Team members rolled up their sleeves for an incredible planting session at Scotchman Creek. In collaboration with the City of Monash Sustainability Team and the Friends of Scotchman Creek Association, students planted 1,500 native plants in just four hours—an impressive display of teamwork and dedication.

Following their efforts, the students enjoyed a well-deserved lunch of sausages and veggie burgers, kindly prepared by Mr. Chris Barry. Refueled and re-energised, they continued planting trees around the school grounds, supported by the ever-enthusiastic Mr. Peter Rhodes.

A big thank you to Christopher Barry for the delicious lunch and to Peter Rhodes for bus driving and on-ground support.

Career Launchpad: Regenerative Economy @ Monash University

On Friday 25th of July, in another exciting initiative, Green Team members joined Enrichment students for the Career Launchpad: Regenerative Economy event at Monash University—imagine speed-dating, but for sustainable careers!

Students met with professionals from organisations like SEC and Cleanaway, participated in rapid-fire interviews, and brainstormed clever questions to ask industry experts. Highlights included an inspiring keynote by Dr. Susie Ho, a Monash climate leader who represented at the 2023 UN Climate Change Conference.

The day ended with students taking home valuable insights, free eco-goodies, and plenty of inspiration for future green careers.

Big thanks to Connor Fleming for his support and Timothy Li for organising this eye-opening experience.

The Verdict? Whether planting thousands of native species, leading peer-to-peer environmental education, or exploring future green career pathways, the Green Team continues to prove that they’re not just talking about change—they’re making it happen.

Stay tuned for more green action in the coming weeks! 💚🌿

The Green Team has been doing an outstanding job over the past few weeks!

They’ve been hard at work cleaning, restoring, and planting a variety of Australian native plants and vegetables. The team also repaired the water tank, which now allows us to use sustainable water sources for our garden. New soil and mulch have been added—not only to support healthy growth, but also to keep the area safe and welcoming for everyone.

In addition to their hands-on work, the Green Team has begun educating students about important environmental initiatives. They’ve been raising awareness about the Container Deposit Scheme, proper recycling practices, and water conservation.

Eye-catching posters created by the team have been placed around the school, reminding everyone to act sustainably and dispose of waste responsibly.

Fantastic work, Green Team! Your efforts are making a real difference. 🌱👏

The brand-new Green Team Information Posters now displayed around the school—in offices, hallways, locker bays, and classrooms!

These vibrant posters are part of our ongoing effort to promote environmental responsibility by encouraging everyone to properly sort and dispose of their waste—especially recyclables.

Please take a moment to remember to throw away rubbish in the correct bins, at home, at work or even when going out. If each of us does our part, we can create a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable school environment.

Secondly, our school has a Container Deposit Scheme, if you have bottles and cans and want to make a contribution to the school, please take your recycle bottles and cans to your nearest CDS centre. Brentwood Secondary College’s Donation Partner ID is C2000010797. Our Green Team will be collecting cans and bottles at the school on Wednesday lunch time, students can make their deposit there.

Let’s work together to make a difference—one piece of rubbish at a time!
