From the Classroom

News from The Seniors

In English, our reading journey has continued with our class novel, where we’ve been uncovering the different character archetypes the author has woven into the story. Students have been spotting these familiar roles and linking them to other books, movies, and TV shows they know. They’ve also been stepping into the shoes of the characters themselves, writing from their perspective to explore how they think, feel, and react in different situations.

Last week in Maths, students completed a mini time project where they planned their perfect day travelling in an overseas destination. This hands-on task helped them apply their knowledge of both 12-hour and 24-hour time, read and interpret timetables, and calculate elapsed time. Moving forward, we will shift our focus to using the four operations with decimals, discussing and practicing which strategies are the most efficient for different problem types.

Finally, the Year 5 students had a special taste-tester day at Bayswater Secondary College. They took part in a variety of activities, including cooking pizzas, playing sports games, exploring electrical conductors and insulators in a STEAM session, and creating with Makey Makey kits. They had a fantastic day and represented Marlborough brilliantly. Check out some photos below!

Middle School News

On Tuesday, Middle Unit visited Healesville Sanctuary as it relates to our Inquiry Unit, Living Things. Students had a wonderful time participating in the lesson on life cycles, watching the bird show, Spirits of the Sky and wandering around looking at all the animals. A special thank you to Diane C and Beck T for volunteering their time and accompanying us to the Sanctuary. We really appreciated your time, energy and support on this day!

In Science and Inquiry, we continue to investigate and explore life cycles, classifying different types of animals and researching their habitats, diet and the adaptations that help them to survive.

In English, Middle A continue to read our class novel, The Callers.  The students are enjoying the text and are excited to read what happens next. We are exploring figurative language, characterisation and characteristics and key events that move the plot forward.

Middle B are continuing to look at perspective, especially the 'Wolfs' perspective in a variety of tales. We have also been doing some Readers Theatre with the class throwing themselves into their roles.

In Maths, Middle A are starting a new topic on Place Value and money. Please feel free to support your child by allowing them to add and pay for items at shops and calculate the change they will receive. over the next few weeks we will also be investigating elapsed time (how long events take) and capacity (how much something can hold).

Middle B have completed a unit on fractions and will be starting to look at multiplication. Our regular retrieval practice is enabling students to recall and apply their knowledge to a variety of maths problems.

Juniors Tell All

In English, Juniors have been learning to persuade their audience with their arguments and supporting reasons. Look out families, they can be very persuasive! We will be reading narratives and making connections between the characters and our own lives.

In Maths, Junior A have been investigating partitioning and adding using hands on materials. They are having lots of fun using their Ninja Number Sliders, demonstrating their understanding of partitioning a range of numbers.

Junior B have been learning a range of strategies to work out various multiplication problems. They have been enjoying investigating the mass of various objects and using balancing scales to measure the weight of these objects.

Looking ahead, Juniors will be starting to learn about subtraction and the different strategies they can use to solve problems.

Juniors are having lots of fun learning about the olden days including how things have changed over time. We also enjoyed making domino tracks in Science, learning about the effects of force including pulling and pushing and how it can change the direction of objects.

Reminders: Next Friday 22nd is Book Week dress up day. We can't wait to see the creative costumes the students come up with!

On Tuesday 9th September, Juniors have an exciting incursion coming up- Past in the Class where they will be transported back in time to a classroom from the 1800s.
