Junior Years Learning Community

Junior Years - Term 3 - Weeks 3 and 4

Foundation 

In Literacy, we have been learning the sound-symbol correspondences for ‘sh’, ‘qu, ‘ee’, ‘z’ and ‘zz’. We have also been focussing on reading and writing tricky words, go, so, no, this and then. The students have been practicing verbally putting these tricky words into sentences.  

 

In Numeracy, we have been learning about addition and subtraction. The students have been practicing ‘counting on’ to find the answer of a pictorial representation of an addition or subtraction number story within 10. They have been using concrete materials such as counters and tens frames to assist their problem solving.  

 

In Religion, our topic is, ‘Our Bible’. Students have been learning about why the Bible is a special book for Christians and that there are many different stories that teach us about God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.  

 

In Inquiry our topic is, ‘What makes our body work?’. We have been learning about different ways that we can move our bodies to stay healthy.  

 

At home you could reinforce learning by: 

  • Listening to your child read their reader each night. 
  • Practice reading and writing tricky words found in the back of the Home Reading Diary. 
  • Practice handwriting lowercase letters of the alphabet. 
  • Draw your own picture to represent an addition number story and share the story with someone at home. For example, I had three apples and my friend had 2 apples. How many apples do we have all together? 

Year One

 

In Literacy, we have been learning about doubling letters f, l and s at the end of words. We have also been learning about suffixes. We have been focusing on spelling tricky words kind, find and thought.  

 

In Numeracy, we have been learning about patterns. Students have been making 2 and 3 part repeating patterns with shapes. Students have been practicing skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s.  

 

In Religion our topic is, ‘Jesus’ story. We have been learning about different stories in the bible and exploring our favourite Jesus stories. 

 

In Inquiry our topic is, ‘What makes our body work?’. We have been making and labelling our body parts using cardboard.  

 

At home you could reinforce learning by: 

  • Listening to your child read their reader each night. 
  • Practice spelling our tricky words (kind, find, thought) and writing them in sentences. 
  • Practice handwriting on dotted thirds lines.  
  • Practice skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s. 

Year Two

In Literacy, we have been learning about Silent letters k,b and w. We are also learning about the spelling choice k or c.  Our focus tricky words are together, any, many, decided, know, were. 

In Numeracy, we have been focusing on Multiplication and Division. We are learning about using our strategies of doubling numbers, skip counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s and making arrays to complete multiplication and division word problems. We are also beginning our Shape unit where we will be learning how to name, identify and describe two-dimensional shapes 

 

In Religion our topic is, Jesus’ story. We have been learning about different stories in the bible and exploring our favourite Jesus stories. 

In Inquiry our topic is, ‘What makes our body work?’. We have been making and labelling our body parts using cardboard. 

 

At home you could reinforce learning by: 

  • Practice spelling our tricky words (together, any, many, decided, know, were. 

    and writing them in sentences. 

  • Listening to your child read their reader each night. 
  • Complete a word hunt for k and c spelling choices in their home readers. 
  • Skip count by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. 
  • Identify, draw and describe two-dimensional shapes we see around us.
