Learning in 5/6J

It has been a very busy time in Year 5/6 lately. Students have participated in a range of events and excursions.  On Tuesday, the 5/6s had the opportunity to visit Werribee Open Range Zoo. This links with our Inquiry topic of Animal Features & Adaptations.

On Wednesday, the Year 4 & 5 students saw the Avila & Mazenod Production, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

The Paris Olympics have come to St Leonard's. Year 5/6 students have been participating in our very own, Mini Olympics.

Werribee Zoo Excursion

Evangeline:

On Tuesday, July 30th, we had an exciting trip to Werribee Zoo to learn about animal adaptations. During our visit, we saw lots of African animals. These included: gorillas, vervet monkeys, cheetahs, African wild dogs, hippos and many more. Each animal had unique adaptations that allowed them to thrive in their natural habitat, and it was amazing to learn about these characteristics up close. My favourite part of the trip was going on the Safari Bus. This ride allowed us to see many animals in a more natural, open environment, making the experience feel like a real African safari.

Maddie:

This term the 5/6s  have been learning about Adaptations. We've been learning about how animals eat, what habitat they live in and how they survive. We had an excursion to Werribee Zoo. We saw African wild dogs, lions, cheetahs and many more. It was really cool seeing all the different animals and learning about their home.

Yoshita:

On Tuesday, the 30th of July, the year 5/6s went on a trip to Werribee Zoo to learn all about African animals and their adaptations. We saw many extraordinary animals, such as African wild dogs and Vervet Monkeys. During our visit, we learnt a key phrase for African animals, while making an analysis about their skulls. It was ‘Eyes on the front, born to hunt. Eyes on the side, born to hide’. All the animals and their adaptations were awesome to learn and see about. The most exciting part about the trip was obviously the Safari Bus. Many students enjoyed it, and so did I.

Pahanya:

On Tuesday, the 30th of July, we were fortunate enough to visit Weribee Zoo! Currently, we have been learning about Animal Adaptations, which ties in nicely. We took a bus that took about 1 hour and when we arrived, it was foggy, however it cleared after an hour or two. We saw some incredible animals, such as gorillas, cheetas, lions, vervet monkeys, and even african wild dogs! We had an education session and learned a catchy rhyme that’ll help us with recognising animals; ‘Eyes at the front, born to hunt, eyes at the side, born to hide.’ After this, we had a safari bus tour and saw giraffes, bison, ostriches, rhinos, hippos, and so much more. All of us had a really fun time at the zoo!

Our Education session about animal Adaptations:

Flynn:

On Tuesday the 30th of July the year 5 and 6s went to Werribee Zoo. It was a very fun day with so many animals. Unlike Melbourne Zoo, Werribee has a large amount of African animals. When we were at the zoo we had the task to write down all about 2 animals of our choice that we saw. I did it on the meerkat and the vervet monkey.

Faith:

On Tuesday the 30th, all the 5/6s went to Werribee Zoo. We had lots of fun and saw many African animals that some of us had never seen before such as gorillas, African wild dogs, hippos, lions, cheetahs and many more fascinating animals. We also went on a safari bus where we saw rhinos, ostriches, giraffes, zebras, antelope and Asian wild horses.

Maggie:

On Tuesday the 30th of July the year 5/6s went to Werribee Zoo and saw a collection of African animals! All of them were in different shapes and sizes, the time we took to observe them was incredible. Some animals we saw were Cheetahs, African Wild dogs, lions, Rhinos, hippos, monkeys and more. After looking at all the animals around the zoo we then went with a zoo ranger to learn about animal skulls and what they eat, Faith, Maddie and I got the African wild dog skull, it was fake but it matched the scale. Eventually, we arrived to the Safari bus to observe the zebras, Giraffes and it didn’t stop there because more animals were everywhere.

The ever so amazing Safari Bus Tour:

Dylan:

This week on Tuesday, all the year 5/6s went to Werribee Zoo and

took notes on animal adaptations and learned how to tell if an animal is a

Predator or Prey. After, we went on a Safari Bus and rode around a few of the

Animal habitats. My Favourite part was seeing the reptiles. I thank the staff for taking us to Werribee Zoo!

Leon:

This Tuesday the 30th of July we went to Werribee zoo to learn all about the amazing animals. Some of the animals we saw when walking around were lions, African wild dog, a monkey and gorillas. On the safari bus, we learnt about some other animals and what they do like an antelope, zebra, rhino and a giraffe.

Xavier:

On Tuesday the 30th of July the year 5 and 6s went to the zoo. It was a fun day. We walked around the zoo and saw lots of animals like the African wild dog, vervet monkey, rhinos and many more. After walking around the zoo we went on the safari bus and took a tour around the entire zoo.

Avila & Mazenod Production:

Charlie & The Chocolate Factory

Korobee:

On Wednesday I went to Alexander Theatre with the Year 5s from the other classes to watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Students from Avila & Mazenod colleges were acting in this show, and I loved it! I mostly loved the I WANT THE GOLDEN TICKET! Pure imagination, and the dark humoured lines Willy Wonka said.

Izaara:

This week on Wednesday we saw a musical about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This was a great performance by Avila and Mazenod. The part I loved the most was the song, Queen of Pop. This was a wonderful experience for the year 4s & 5s.

Ava:

On Wednesday 31st July 2024, the Year 4 and 5 students went to the Avila and  Mazenod Willy Wonka production. This is a musical about a poor boy called Charlie who wins one of the five golden tickets to explore Mr Wonka’s chocolate factory. My favourite part was the scene with Veruca and the squirrels. Unfortunately, Veruca ended up going down the chute with all the bad nuts. It was very funny.

Summer:

On Wednesday the 31st of July, the Year 4s and 5s went to watch the production by Avila and Mazenod. The production was Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. There are five golden tickets in five chocolates. This poor boy Charlie only gets chocolate once a year on his birthday but when he opened it there was nothing. But one day Charlie finds money and buys a chocolate and he had finally found the last ticket. My favourite part was when Veruca wanted a squirrel.

Anabella:

Yesterday morning, all the year fours and fives hopped on a bus and headed to Monash University to see the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory production performed by Avila and Mazenod. At the start of the production, we saw Willy Wonka come out in his classic purple coat in front of the factory gates. Not long after we saw Charlie Bucket with his mum and his four grandparents in bed. It was always Charlie’s dream to enter Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. They found out that there were only five golden tickets in the world to enter the chocolate factory. The first person to get it was Augustus Gloop, then Veruca Salt, Violet Beauregarde, Mike Teavee and finally, the one and only, Charlie Bucket. Personally, my favourite part was when Willy Wonka smashed Mike TV’s phone on the ground, it was really funny.
