Congratulations to our Week 2 SOLE Stars.
Unit 4 Alpine Experience
The Unit 4 Outdoor Environmental Studies students have experienced and survived a 2 day cross country skiing and overnight camp-out in the snow, in the Alpine National Park at Falls Creek. All students and staff did an exceptional job showing great teamwork, resilience and leadership skills. Some of us had not even seen snow before and were able to learn to cross country ski and do it with a hike pack and also stay the night in the snow.
There were challenging times along the way when we were wet and cold, however all ended well and we even had some fun and learnt loads of new skills along the way. We can now say we have survived a night in the snow.
The second part of the trip was downhill skiing which we found more enjoyable and not as challenging. We were able to transfer the skiing skills we had learnt in cross country and use them in downhill and we noticed our improvements quite quickly. We enjoyed skiing the slopes and improving our turning.
Along the way we have learnt about the Alpine environment and the flora and fauna that live there. We have focused on observing the health of this environment and the protection of the Pygmy Possum.
Thanks to all students and staff for a great few days.
Outdoor Education and Conservation Year 9/10 Overnight hike to Mt Kooyoora
The middle of June doesn't sound like the best time to go camping due to the cold weather, however a group of 5 Year 9 Outdoor Ed students and their teachers set out for Mt Kooyoora State Park. We made a necessary stop at the famous Bridgewater Bakery for hot chocolates before entering the state park and putting our navigational skills to the test with an afternoon hike. We worked as a team to follow the map and each student had a go at leading the way.
That evening we cooked up a few different versions of pasta that we had practised cooking in class. Due to it being the middle of winter we made sure we had lots of layers on and kept warm by the fire telling stories and playing games.
We were woken at sunrise by the friendly Kookaburras and the threat of rain. The weather seemed to hold for us though and we had some breakfast and packed up camp, making sure to leave no trace behind us and follow our minimal impact camping guideline. We headed to Melville Caves Lookout and explored the granite boulder caves. The Mt Kooyoora area is in Dja Dja Wurrung country, and we had a look at the ‘Celestial pools’ which was a pool of water that runs directly east/west and was used as a geographical calendar to track sun movements and seasons. We also had a look at the ‘White Swan’ crystal mine where Europeans mined quarts during World War 2 and used the quartz in radios.
Overall we found this experience challenging at times but an enjoyable way to finish off the subject and allow us to put everything we have learnt in class into practice on a real camp.
