From the Head of Ivanhoe Edge

Michelle van Beek, Head of Ivanhoe Edge

Term 3 has certainly been busy for our Ivanhoe Edge community! Students in Ivanhoe Edge were provided with many opportunities to not only continue with their skill sessions and strength and conditioning sessions weekly and continue to make progress on their techniques but also to extend themselves to attend the student workshops  and excursions we have hosted.

On Friday, August 9, a group of Ivanhoe Edge students visited the Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS) for an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at elite athlete training. Students gained invaluable insights into the intense preparation and dedication required to reach the highest levels of sport. This visit sparked new ambitions and fostered a strong sense of belonging for the students within the Ivanhoe Edge community. You can read more about this motivating day in the full article later in the newsletter.

Our Ivanhoe Edge students were given the opportunity to participate in a series of workshops focusing on Respiratory System Training — Powering Up Your Performance with Anna Tetlow. The 60-minute workshop combined scientific insights into breathing's role in balancing body and brain with practical exercises for enhancing sport performance. Anna was exceptionally knowledgeable and approachable, teaching students how to use conscious breathing to improve endurance, manage stress, and support recovery. The skills learned benefit not only athletic performance but also help students stay calm and focused in academic settings. The students who attended the workshop highly recommend attending over the last two weeks for its practical, science-based approach and valuable takeaways. Read more in the article l

On Monday, July 29, Ivanhoe Edge hosted an informative webinar on concussion management with speakers Saul Smith and Michelle Taylor. Saul Smith highlighted the critical need for immediate action when a concussion is suspected, discussing symptoms like headaches, dizziness, confusion, and sensitivity to light. He emphasized early recognition, prompt medical attention, and the importance of rest and a gradual return to normal activities. Michelle Taylor, Nurse in Charge at Ivanhoe Grammar School, outlined the school's comprehensive concussion management policy, detailing the structured protocol from initial assessment to ongoing support. She reassured parents of the school's commitment to student well-being, including accommodations like modified workloads and extended deadlines. The session underscored the collaborative efforts needed to protect students' health and academic progress.
