VAPS Conference Recap

What a spectacular event we had at the biennial VAPS Conference, held this past December 2023 at The University of Melbourne! Our conference, renowned for its dedication to the advancement of philosophy in education, brought together passionate educators, thought leaders, and advocates from all corners of the globe. It was a gathering marked by inspiration, collaboration, and profound insights into the world of philosophy with children.

This year's conference delved into diverse topics ranging from critical and creative thinking to the community of inquiry, reflecting the multifaceted nature of philosophical exploration in education. With a keen focus on the new VCE Study Design, attendees engaged in thought-provoking presentations and discussions, paving the way for innovative approaches to teaching and learning.

We were privileged to host two exceptional keynote presentations, illuminating our conference with their expertise and wisdom. First, we were honored to welcome Associate Professor Megan Laverty from Teachers College, Columbia University. A trailblazer in the field of philosophy of education, Megan captivated our audience with her profound insights into moral philosophy and philosophy with children and adolescents.

Our second keynote session paid tribute to the remarkable work of Janette Poulton, a visionary in the Philosophy for Children space. Speakers from various backgrounds shared their experiences and reflections, underscoring the transformative power of philosophical inquiry in education.

The theme for last year's conference, "Educating for Capabilities: Critical & Creative Thinking, Ethical, Intercultural, Personal, & Social," resonated deeply with our community. It underscored our commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals equipped with the skills and values necessary to thrive in an ever-changing world.

As we reflect on the success of the VAPS Conference 2023, let us carry forward the spirit of collaboration and inquiry that permeated our gathering. Together, we continue to champion the transformative potential of philosophy in education and inspire the next generation of critical thinkers and ethical leaders.

Thank you to all who contributed to making this year's conference a resounding success. We look forward to seeing you at the next VAPS event as we continue our journey of learning and exploration together.
