Container Deposit Scheme (CDS)

By Sahana, Havish, Navya and Milan - Environment Captains

We are the 2024 Environment Captains – Navya, Sahana, Milan and Havish – and we have some really exciting news to share with you. We are thrilled to introduce an exciting new fundraising initiative for our school that not only benefits our community but also makes a significant difference to the environment. Our school has partnered with Victoria's Container Deposit Scheme (CDS Vic). What does this mean and involve?

  • It means that we will be recycling containers (see below) and at the same time raise money for our school.
  • We would love everyone in our school community to recycle the following containers:

Collect eligible drink containers – Look for the 10c mark on the drink container label.

Most aluminium, glass, plastic, and liquid paperboard (carton) drink containers between 150mL and 3 litres are eligible. You can keep the lids on, these are recyclable too.

What can’t be returned (however you can still recycle at home)?

There are some drink containers that are not eligible for a refund. Generally excluded containers are those that are less than 150mL and greater than 3 litres. E.g. – Plain milk containers, Cordial or syrup containers, Large containers including juice or flavoured milk.

For more details visit the CDS Vic website for frequently asked questions: https://cdsvic.org.au/about-cds-vic

What can you do to participate?

  • Option A:
  1. Start collecting eligible containers – please do not crush the containers, because we need to be able scan the barcode!
  2. We suggest you put them in a bag or box to transport them to school.
  3. When you get to school, please place the entire bag or container in the large blue bins located near the Science Shed.
  4. We will then recycle them each month.

  • Option B:
  1. Start collecting eligible containers – please do not crush the containers, because you will need to be able to scan the barcode.
  2. We suggest you put them in a bag or box to transport them to a recycling depot.
  3. Insert eligible containers into the machine and select donation point – Glen Waverley Primary School.
  4. You can choose to download and use the CDS Vic East App, CDS Vic North app or CDS Vic West App to find Glen Waverley Primary, as a registered charity partner. This will allow you to set up donation payments as your preference. Alternatively at the depot select our school as a preferred pay-out option and the funds will be directly paid to our school via our Donation Partner ID - C2000010640.

Please refer to sign up process attached.

You can also find your nearest refund point - https://cdsvic.org.au/locations and visit a depot directly.

CDS Vic encompasses three zones: the North, West and East zones.

We are very excited about this initiative because as the Environment Captains we are passionate about making a difference to the environment and our school. All the funds raised this year will go towards our new Year 6 Area which everyone can use for many years to come.

So …………….. please start collecting!  Thank you everyone!

Kind regards,
