An Unforgettable excursion! "Moulin Rouge: The Musical!"

On Wednesday 6 September, the Year 9 Music and Dance classes visited the Arts Centre Melbourne to explore Hamer Hall, Victorian State Theatre and the Australian Music Vault. As an avid fan of music and concerts, I absolutely loved the opportunity to visit these iconic venues and learn more about Australian music. Later on, we went to Regent Theatre to watch Moulin Rouge: The Musical, which was definitely the highlight of the day.

Moulin Rouge was an incredible and memorable show! From the moment the curtains lifted, I was transported into a world of dazzling lights, pulsating music, and breathtaking performances. The iconic songs from the original film such as 'Come What May' and 'Your Song' were brought to life with a fresh and electrifying energy. The cast was phenomenal, their voices filled with passion and emotion, capturing the essence of each character. The elaborate sets and costumes were a visual spectacle, immersing me in the vibrant world of the Moulin Rouge. The theatrical magic left me in awe and filled my heart with joy. If you ever get the chance, don't miss the opportunity to experience the magic of Moulin Rouge: The Musical!

Entrancing Performing Arts Excursion to “Moulin Rouge! The Musical”

On Wednesday 6 September, the Year 9 Music and Dance Nossal students were treated to an invaluable experience: the chance to watch a professional performance of “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” at the Regent Theatre - a perfect, relaxing way to conclude the term! The morning kicked off with traversing through the “Arts Centre Melbourne”, where we explored Hamer Hall, a cave-like, massive concert hall with amazing acoustics, followed by the Spire, creatively designed to symbolize the flowing folds of a ballerina’s tutu. Furthermore, we were next immersed into the world of music through the Australian Music Vault, an interactive exhibition of Australian music and culture, with the highlight of the Amplifier room, which realistically simulated hit Australian concerts through the decades.

After the morning's musical immersion, we were ready for the main event we all bonded over anticipation for: “Moulin Rouge! The Musical”! As a jukebox musical, Moulin Rouge impressively uses well-known songs and seamlessly wove them together, creating a thrilling story. The dazzling dance numbers with complex, upbeat, and synchronized choreography, accompanied with theatrical elements such as sparkling costumes and flashing lighting started the show with a bang, transporting the audience into the vibrant world of musical theatre. For me, a passionate music student, the best part of the musical was, well, the music! I found it intriguing to see how different musical elements were combined, through new, old, and classical pieces that we all know and love which were mashed up to create exciting arrangements with new instrumental and melodic ideas. A personal highlight performance of the show was "Backstage Romance," a medley featuring "Toxic", "Sweet Dreams” and "Bad Romance". The medley perfectly encapsulated the most suspenseful plot point in the musical: the hidden affairs, starring a poor Bohemian songwriter/poet, Christian, who falls for a beautiful star coveted by a jealous duke.

All in all, the unforgettable music and dance excursion to “Moulin Rouge! The Musical” allowed us all to gain a richer understanding of music culture, and become inspired to achieve greatness in performing arts through the creativity and talent of the cast, allowing us all to take home something new.
