Learning and Teaching

Learning Space 1 Juniors

What a great few weeks it has been with the LS1 Juniors so far. The children have settled into the space extremely well and have gotten to know each other, and have made the Preps feel very welcome. New friendships are forming and there is lots of learning happening.

All of the Clinics in LS1 are learning about Time in Maths.

Clinic 1 have been discussing what happens at different times of the day and Clinics 2 and 3 have been learning about the clock, its features and telling the time.

Clinic 3 made their own clocks and posed time questions to their peers.

Can you show me quarter to three on your clock?

Can you show me the time half past 5 on your clock?

You can also play this game at home with your children, taking turns at guessing the time.

In writing, Clinic one has been working very hard and having lots of fun at the same time. They have focussed on learning the letters S, A, T, P, I, N and the sounds that these letters make.

We have been singing, drawing and creating the letters in different ways. We have thought about lots of different words that have these letters somewhere in the word.

snake      astronaut     toilet   pop   ice cream    nice

You can play eye spy at home and try to find some items that have the letter/ sound S,A,T,P,I,N.

Eye spy with my little eye, something beginning with ……S ?

During a language experience activity, Clinic one went out to spend some quality time with our school chickens. We observed what they looked like, how they moved and some of the things they like to do in their home; the  veggie garden. The children had so much fun and couldn’t stop talking about the chickens. They came back inside and created a chicken craft activity. You can have a look at these on the inside of the door in our learning space.

SENIOR SPORT

GRADE 5/6 SPORT

The senior students are actively engaging in their sports practice and gaining a deeper understanding of the associated rules and expectations. They are demonstrating commendable sportsmanship towards one another and are also helping their peers comprehend the game rules. It is truly gratifying to witness the growth and maturity of our students at St. Francis De Sales Primary School. The focus extends beyond merely winning; it encompasses the enjoyment derived from participating in physical activities.

GRADE 3/4 SPORT

We have progressed with our sports rotations, allowing students to familiarise themselves with the rules of various sports. They are gaining a clear understanding of the regulations and expectations associated with representing our school in interschool competitions. The students are not only enjoying the experience but are also acquiring knowledge about a different sport.

BIKE EDUCATION

This marks the initial lesson in which the students are cycling beyond the school premises. We primarily navigated the bike paths around Banjo Paterson. As they encountered pedestrians and fellow cyclists, the students demonstrated commendable conduct towards one another and the broader community.

They adhered to all the safety protocols we had instructed them on and communicated effectively, ensuring that everyone enjoyed the cycling experience. Furthermore, this will assist the students in developing confidence in their ability to anticipate various situations while riding their bikes.

THE VICTORIAN RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP PROGRAM

The Responsible Pet Ownership (RPO) program educates children from ages 4 to 12 on:

  • living safely with dogs
  • responsible pet ownership.

This was a fantastic opportunity for our students and they learnt about how to approach dogs and which dogs to approach after asking for permission from the dog’s owner. They learnt how to deal with a threatening dog and how to react in order to keep safe. And all the responsibilities that are involved in owning a pet.

We would like to say a huge thank you to Ruth and her dog Flayme who was a big hit not only with the students in their session but also with the staff in the staff room during break time.

SFS TWILIGHT SPORTS

Thursday March 6th, 2025

5.30 – 8.00 pm

Our annual Twilight Sports will be held on Thursday March 6th from 5:30 to 8pm on the school grounds. This has proven to be a fantastic community event mainly due to the fact that most students attend. In fact this year we will be giving points to the students who attend that will go towards the House Community Spirit Award at the end of the year. So just by attending students will receive points for their House!

Home Group Teachers should have informed new students, including Foundation students of the House they belong to. If you have any queries about Houses please contact your Home Group Teacher.

Students will be required to wear their sports uniform on the night as they will be running, but we hope that they will wear a t-shirt that is in their house colour and wear other accessories such as hats, scarves… in their house colour.

Teresa House - Blue

MacKillop House – Yellow

Bosco House – Red

Patrick House – Green

Students will be sitting with their houses under their house marques, supervised by staff. We ask that for the safety of students, parents do not come over to the marques side. We also ask that parents do not collect their children early as staff are busy organising the students. All students will be dismissed at the end of the night, when we ask parents to come and collect their child.

We ask all parents and visitors to please use the LS2 toilets on the evening. Students will be using the Hall toilets and for their safety we ask all guests, including parents to only use the LS2 toilets.

Students that come 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th will be awarded points for their House and we will also be giving out points to the House who supports their competitors the most. A presentation will be held at the end, to announce the House winners for the house sports award and the house spirit award. The Grade 6 Gift will also be presented to the fastest Grade 6.

Parents & Friends will be supplying a free sausage to all students on the night which we are very thankful for. Please ensure you complete the form that is sent home and return to school so your child doesn’t miss out. Parents & Friends will also be selling sausages and drinks on the evening so please bring your change.

We hope to have parent and toddler races as well! And this year those who come 1st – 4th can also earn points for their child’s House.

Parents will be asked to sit on the school side of the track across from where students are sitting in their Houses.

Please ensure you have given permission via Operoo for your child to attend and ensure their medical profile is up to date.

If any parents are able to assist putting up the marquees at 2.30 pm Thursday afternoon, please come and join us on the oval. We will also need assistance at the end of the evening packing up the marquees. Your assistance will be greatly appreciate
