Visual Arts
Last week in Visual Arts, students explored the art element of colour through painting and colour mixing. Foundation students worked with primary colours (red, yellow, and blue) and experimented with mixing them to create secondary colours (green, orange, and purple). Year 1/2 students also explored colour mixing and applied their learning by creating a colour wheel lion. Year 3/4 students created their own colour wheels, blending primary colours to form secondary colours. Year 5/6 students were introduced to the work of Pop Artist Sandra Silberzweig. They followed step-by-step instructions to draw an abstract portrait, then outlined their work using black PVA glue. Once dried, they began adding colour using dry pastels, focusing on analogous colours (colours next to each other on the colour wheel), creating smooth blends and bold, vibrant effects. It was an exciting week of creativity and colour exploration in the art room!

Culture Studies
This week in Culture Studies, students continued their exploration of Chinese culture. They identified Chinaโs location on the world map, learnt about its capital city, the languages spoken, the currency used, and the significance of the colours and symbols on the Chinese flag. Students also learnt about the importance of Harmony Day, celebrated on March 21st. This day promotes diversity, respect, and inclusion, with the key message that "Everyone Belongs." Wearing orange on Harmony Day symbolises communication and mutual respect, helping us appreciate the different cultures and traditions that make up Australia. To celebrate, students created paper Harmony Day braceletsโone for themselves, one to give to a friend, and one to contribute to our school-wide Harmony Day chain, symbolising unity and belonging. It was a meaningful and creative way for students to reflect on diversity and the importance of inclusion in our community!ย

PE Program
Over the past two weeks students have gotten back into regular PE sessions after the swimming program had finished. As a result, it was about getting the prep to 2 students back into the routines and expectations of PE. This was done by participating in minor games. It also including some focus on running and team work. In week 8 students had a bigger focus on correct running technique to get ready for house cross county that is coming up at the end of the term. Students were encouraged to run by looking straight ahead, pumping their arms and using high knees.
Students in years 3-6 were introduced to the skills of teeball. This included working out how to wear the glove on their non preferred hand, which is quite challenging for many to understand. They also developed the skills of throwing, picking up and catching the ball. They also had a try and hitting the ball off a tee, and an understanding of how to do this affectively. They have had a go at a game to develop an understanding of the strategies to play the game.

Interschool Sports
Students played their last round of interschool sports for the term before the lightning premiership which is being held today. It has been a great term of sport for all students with many really developing their skills, but more importantly they developed friendships and social connections outside of the classroom.
It will be a good day of sport today, and I wish everyone a great day of fun and competition.

Libraryย
ย
The first term has already almost come to an end in the library.
We have achieved a lot! We got a new scanner, lots of new books, and a new library team.
Next term, there are lots of different activities happening.
May is National Family Reading Month. In order to support this, we are running our second ever Le Page Readathon, our first Scholastic Book Fair of the year, and Simultaneous Storytime Day!
Keep your eyes open on compass and in the newsletter for more information about all of this.ย
ย
As always, thank you to everyone who has supported the library so far in 2025: the amazing library leaders; families who have donated resources; teachers who encourage studentsโ love for reading; and Story Dogs volunteers.ย

Auslan Newsletter.
ย
These past two weeks the students have been learning about morning routines. They have been learning to sign their daily morning activities and have remembered these signs well. Much of our Auslan signs relate to the movement of particular words. For example, sun rise is the left hand positioned in a circle (resembling the sun), moving up over the right hand, imitating the sun coming up over the horizon.ย
We have also been learning about moving around the city. The importance of following a map, being confident enough to ask someone for directions and learning the street names of Melbourne City.ย
It has been another fun and informative two weeks in Auslan.
Thank you very much.
Ms. Buchan.ย
