Auslan Report

This fortnight in Auslan, Grade Preps will be learning the topics Everyday Signs and Family and Grades 1-6 students will learn about Shops and Outside the House. For everyday signs Grade Preps will learn these words in Auslan: again, which, where, come, stop, go, stand, sit, toilet, finish, thank you, please, yes, no, ‘How are you?’, good, bad and okay. The activity they will complete will involve the teacher and students sitting in a circle. One person will start by signing “How are You?” to the person next to them. That student will sign their answer - good, bad or ok. Then they will sign “How are You?” to the next person and so on around the circle. Grade preps will also practise the ‘How are you?’ Song from the video.
When learning about family, Grade Preps will learn the signs: Family, Mum, Dad, Parents, Brother, Sister, Son, Daughter, Baby, Children, Boy, Girl, Niece, Nephew, Auntie, Uncle, Cousin, Grandmother, Grandfather and Grandparents. Learning activities will include drawing family members, labelling and signing who their family members are, for example, Mother.
Grades 1-6 will learn the signs: Shops, shopping, buy, Supermarket, Chemist, Bank, Fruit shop, Butcher, Coffee shop - cafe, Toy shop and Ice-cream shop. Grade 1/2 will practise the signs during a shopping circle activity. This involves students signing the shop they are going to and what they will buy. Each student will take turns in the circle. Grade 3/4 students will do a similar activity and they will incorporate the fruit signs they have learnt in previous lessons. Grade 5/6 students will play a game called ‘I went to the shop and bought……..’ This activity will encourage students to finger spell each item that they chose to buy.
When learning about ‘outside the house’, students will practise signing the following words: Backyard, grass, fence, gate, barbeque (BBQ), shed, letterbox, bucket, hose, garage, lawnmower, garden and trees. Grade 1/2 students will do an activity that involves a picture and word match up game to support practising the signs. Grade 3/4 students will play the click and clap game where they will clap and click in rhythm until the teacher points to a word and students sign that word. The clap and click rhythm will then continue until the next word is pointed to. Grade 5/6 students will do a more challenging activity which will entail a concentration game with the ‘outside of the house’ words. They will be required to fingerspell each word as they make their concentration matches.
As our students build their repertoire of words, engage in conversations and enjoy practising signs together as learnt by our students! Please scan the QR Code below which will provide you with YouTube videos to assist in practising together at home.
