Learning and Teaching

Learning and Teaching Closure Day
On Friday March 7th all staff at OLSC worked together, furthering our learning of the Science of Learning, in particular the MACS Vision for Instruction. We revisited our work on daily reviews, their importance and the explicit teaching model of I do, We do and You do. This involves the teacher modelling, demonstrating and explaining exactly what we want the students to learn. Then the 'We do' section is the teacher and students working through the learning together. Finally the practice part of the lesson is the 'You do' where students have a task to complete independently.
The video below is of Dr Nathaniel Swain who explains Explicit Teaching further.
We then did a deep dive into what Checking for Understanding looks like and sounds like. We modelled different strategies to check what the students have learnt. You may hear your child / ren talking about using mini white boards and cold calling. These are two strategies that we are using to ensure that students have understood the content or concepts we are teaching before we move forward in the learning sequence.
Fun fact 1: It takes 11 - 72 repetitions of a concept to learn.
Fun fact 2: Learning is a change in long term memory.
We will continue to bring you information about what learning looks like at OLSC throughout the year. If you have questions about these strategies, please feel free to reach out to Bec.
