Year 5/6 News

Learning Centre Four
Year 5
Literacy: Through Literacy we explored characters. We read descriptions of The Twits and drew what we heard then added modality words to make the descriptions more interesting. We then described the actions and personalities of the characters.
Numeracy: In Numeracy, students have been working across different groups with different teachers focusing on their understanding of multiplication and division, understanding the symbols, groups of, factors and multiplies.
Inquiry: During Inquiry, students are developing their understanding of how their bodies will change during puberty and have been encouraged to ask questions.
Religion: For Religion, we are developing our understanding of Pilgrims of Hope and Pilgrim People. We have read scriptures relating to each and images that represent these.
Wellbeing: We explored how you can use your character strengths to help build a respectful and inclusive environment. We listed what sorts of actions we could take to be respectful to someone, for example, listening to them.
Special Events: NAPLAN is done!! A huge congratulations to all Year 5 students for their amazing efforts.
Year 6
Literacy: Past 2 weeks, our Year 6s have been learning about storytelling by reading Indigenous texts. We have been focusing on important parts of a story, like the rising action, climax, and resolution. Learning about Indigenous storytelling has helped us understand more about Aboriginal culture and the way stories are used to teach lessons. Some of the stories have been really fun and creative, while others have made us think about important messages. As we continue to develop our writing skills, we are learning the importance of following a structured sequence. Starting with brainstorming and planning allows us to organize our thoughts before we begin writing. As we move into drafting, we focus on building clear and engaging ideas like a sizzling start while ensuring our writing flows smoothly. Revising helps us refine our work by improving word choice, sentence structure, and overall clarity. Finally, editing allows us to polish our writing by correcting grammar and punctuation. By following this natural progression, we are becoming more confident and effective writers, creating well-structured and thoughtful pieces.
Numeracy: Over the past two weeks, the Year 6 students have been focusing on mastering the order of operations, a key concept in mathematics. Through their lessons on BODMAS / PIDMAS, they’ve learned how to thoroughly approach and solve complex problems. The students have been practicing applying these rules to a range of problems, gradually increasing in complexity, and building confidence in their ability to solve them. They can now break down multi-step equations with ease, which boosts their problem-solving skills and overall number sense. What’s exciting is how the Year 6s have embraced these challenges. They now approach even complex problems confidently, knowing the order of operations simplifies tasks that once seemed difficult. This newfound confidence has led to a sense of achievement when solving tricky equations. This week, the Year 6 students have moved on to a new topic, area and perimeter. This unit has introduce them to key geometry concepts, teaching them how to calculate the space inside shapes and the distance around them, helping to strengthen their problem-solving skills for more advanced learning.
Inquiry: Over the past 2 weeks, the Year 6 students have been focusing on the importance of healthy eating, as we strive to help our students to stay healthy, fit, and energized throughout the day. In the classroom, students have been learning about the components of a healthy eating plate, including protein, carbohydrates, vegetables, fruits, dairy, healthy fats, and more. In addition to learning about the nutrients from these foods, the Year 6 students have discovered that overeating, even healthy foods, can have a significant impact on the body.
Eating healthy isn’t about saying "no" to fun foods; it's all about making choices that nourishes and provides essential nutrients to your body, and supports overall well-being, it's about how it makes you feel!
Religion: Step by step, our Year 6 students are walking in the footsteps of Jesus.
This week, they are immersing themselves in the powerful tradition of the Stations of the Cross—a series of 14 events that trace Jesus’ journey to His crucifixion. Each station invites students to pause and reflect on His incredible sacrifice, while embracing the values of love, compassion, and forgiveness. At our school, we bring this tradition to life through prayer, reflection, and a physical walk through the stations. Our Year 6 students will be at the heart of this special activity, deepening their understanding of its significance and preparing their hearts for the joy of Easter.
