Literacy

Welcome to the Literacy page of the OLSC newsletter. Here you will find information about the Literacy programs across the school, interviews with staff and students, news about important events and book recommendations from time to time.
What are you reading?
Every fortnight, staff and students will be invited to share with the school community what they are currently reading.
Finn (Year 3)- Dog Man Series
What do you like about the main character?
He likes to lick people and celebrates the achievements of others.
What do you like about these books?
I like how they use the speech bubbles and there are funny parts in the book. The author writes a bit about Dog Man at the beginning of each book to tell how he turned into Dog Man. In every book, a new character is added and it doesn't get boring. Little Petey is annoying to others but he is a funny character.
Who else might enjoy reading these books?
I think Grade 3 people because there are lots of people in my class who read them.
Rohan (Year 6)- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Why did you choose this book series?
During the pandemic, my mother bought the illustrated version of the first Harry Potter and ever since then I have loved the book. Recently, my mum's friend gave me the entire set and I have been reading the rest of the books over and over again, just because I love them.
What do you like about this book series?
I love the way JK Rowling writes the most vivid descriptions. It is magical how she managed to create the world where the characters live, it is very intriguing. I also love how each character is built up and you get to know them more as they are developed in each book.
Who else might enjoy reading this series of books?
Harry Potter is awesome for everyone but in particular, it would be appealing to children aged 9 and above who enjoy magical and mysterious themes.
Vedanth (Year 4) - Weirdo Series
Why did you choose these books?
The first time I picked up a Weirdo I thought it was funny and the name of the book made me choose it.
What do you like about these books?
There are lots of characters and the author introduces new stuff in every book. The character, Weirdo, is very weird because he makes jokes about other people.
Who else might enjoy reading these books?
People who like chapter books and books in a series would like these books. I think Year 2 to Year 4 students would enjoy these books.
Marion (1/2 Teacher) - The Disappearance of Astrid Bricard
What are you reading at the moment?
The book I am reading at the moment is The Disappearance of Astrid Bricard.
I am only halfway through but it is a good book set in the fashion industry from as far back as the 1930s to the present day.
It follows the lives of three women; a Grandmother, daughter and granddaughter and how they navigate the very male-dominated fashion industry.
Victorian Premiers' Reading Challenge
The Victorian Premier's Reading Challenge has begun and it is time to register your children so they can participate. This initiative is in its 20th year and is a wonderful incentive for children to read more, from March to September, in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development.
The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 and is aimed at encouraging our children to read for enjoyment and to log their reading into a personal online dashboard. It is not a competition; but instead a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 5th September 2025.
Your child/ren will bring home their unique login details this week or next. Please use the links in the letter for parents and the instructional slideshow below to log them into their dashboard. They can then begin reading and adding the books that they finish to their list. Please only add books that they read from the time you first log in.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to get in touch with your child's teacher via Dojo or email me.
