PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Annual Report summary

At the School Council on Wednesday 12th March we held the Annual General Meeting where office bearers for the 2025 school year were finalised.  I am pleased to announce the following parents were elected to these leadership positions:

  • President – Rosanne Guijt
  • Vice President – Laura Vassallo
  • Treasurer – Lucy Fitzgerald

At the Annual General Meeting I tabled the 2024 Annual Report which was approved for publication by School Council. Once this has been approved by the Department of Education it will be available on the Oberon High School website for the school community to read. I will let you know when this occurs.

The Annual Report is completed by all schools each year to provide a summary of how each State Government School across Victoria performed against other schools, taking into account their socio-economic demographics. The data set comparison is compiled by the Department of Education.  This comparison is against a variety of data sets, reflecting both results from 2024 and also in some categories as an average over the previous 4 years.  The comparison includes VCE results, teacher judgements of academic progress, perceptions from students, staff and parents,  student attendance, student pathways and student retention.  Our report indicates that we are rated in front of the state and similar schools in most categories.

In summary the school has performed very well not only in 2024 but also over the past four years in comparison to other State Government secondary schools as well as schools with similar socio-economic profiles to ours.

NAPLAN testing

The 2025 NAPLAN testing began on Wednesday 12th March and will conclude on Monday 24th March.

As parents it is important to remember that NAPLAN assesses skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time. NAPLAN is not a pass or fail type test, but rather shows how students are progressing in numeracy and literacy skills against national standards for all Australia children.

An individual student NAPLAN report will be issued by the school later this year. Parents can use this information to monitor how their child is progressing and to identify any areas of concern.

Interim reports

Parents will be able to access interim reports on the Xuno portal at 4pm on Friday 4th April.  If parents are having trouble accessing the reports, you should contact the school.

Student/Parent/Teacher conferences (new date)

The school has scheduled Student/Parent/Teacher conferences for week two of term two. These will be held on Thursday 1st May (note this is a change of date), with the school day changed to run from 11.30am – 7.30pm for teaching staff.  Parents will be able to book appointments via Xuno from Friday 4th April, 4pm. No classes run on this day but students are expected to attend the appointments with their parents to discuss their academic progress.

Ron Thompson scholarship

I am pleased to announce that Year 10 student Tom Hedt has been awarded the Ron Thompson scholarship in 2025.  Tom will receive financial support for the next three years to support him with his studies.  Tom joins year 12 student Asher Grant and year 11 student Akira Parker as current recipients of this scholarship.

Open night

The school will be holding our Open Night on Thursday 27th March. We will be running school tours for prospective students and parents from 5.00pm-6.25pm, followed by an information session from 6.30pm-7.15pm in the school gym. This will be a ticketed event and those wishing to attend can get further information via the school website.

As a follow up to the night, we will be running tours for interested families every Wednesday and Friday at 9.30am, beginning on Wednesday 2nd April and continuing until Friday 9th May.  Information regarding these tours is available on the school website and will need to be booked through the online ticketing system.

School uniform

A reminder to parents that all students are expected to wear the correct school uniform at all times.  There are a range of options available through our uniform supplier PSW in Geelong.  If you haven’t already done so, can you ensure that all uniform is labelled with your family name, so that this can be returned if found at school.

Last day of term

A reminder to parents and students that the last day of term one is 4th April. School will finish at 2.30pm and the school buses have been notified.

For those planning ahead, term two begins on Tuesday 22nd April (Monday 21st April is Easter Monday).  We only have a three day week the first week back, as Friday 25th April is ANZAC day.
