Year Six

Exploring Democracy Through a Mock Election
As a part of our How The World Works inquiry, Year Six have been diving deep into the workings of government systems in Australia and around the world. In Week Seven, we brought theory into practice by holding our very own mock election, as well as a mock parliament. In the election, students voted for their favourite song, experiencing firsthand the process of preferential voting that is so unique to Australia’s democratic system. The mock parliament saw students vote to pass a law in the ‘House of Representatives’, learning the roles of the various members of government.
This mock election was a fantastic way for Year Six to better understand how voting works in Australia and why our democratic system is so important. It was an exciting, hands-on learning experience that demonstrated the significance of each vote and the role it plays in shaping our society.
Looking ahead, the remainder of Term One will focus on exploring citizenship in Australia, examining how we all contribute to our local, national and global communities.
We commend the Year Six cohort for their enthusiasm and engagement throughout this unit. It’s clear that our democracy is in very safe hands!
