Year One

Unit of Inquiry – Curiosity Leads to Discovery Through Construction!
Last week, our Year One students became curious designers, exploring how structures are made through hands-on construction activities. By experimenting with different materials, they developed problem-solving skills and creativity while learning about building and design.
We started by reading The Imagineer by Christopher Cheng and Lucia Masciullo, a story about Penny, a curious girl who loves to explore how things work. This inspired students to think like designers and discover new ways to create.
Students then examined famous structures and used materials like blocks, LEGO, sticks, and playdough to recreate or design their own. Throughout the session, they reflected on key questions: What materials work best? How can I solve construction challenges? What new techniques am I discovering?
At the end of the session, students shared their discoveries and creative solutions. This engaging experience nurtured curiosity and problem-solving skills, encouraging them to see the world through the eyes of a designer!
