Middle Learning News

Hi everyone!

Another wonderful fortnight together! It’s crazy to think the term holidays are right around the corner.

Last week, we celebrated our beautiful Ebony! Students worked really hard to gift her their words of thanks and well wishes. Through this process, students brushed up on their letter writing skills, vocabulary development along with sentence structure.

I am sure she enjoyed these beautiful creations.

Mathematics

Our mathematics learning has focused on Length. Before starting this, students brainstormed different types of measurement. They were able to recognise time, weight (mass), and capacity in addition to length. We have been using measuring tapes, 30 centimetre, and metre rulers. They are starting to identify which unit of measurement is used to determine the length of particular-sized items. Additionally, they have been putting their estimation skills into practice, improving their guesses over time. Students have connected the measurement of length to our Connection inquiry, which has involved geographical research of the local and wider area. They are currently in the process of planning a family holiday to visit any three destinations in Australia. Students will then map out the most efficient route using maps and kilometres!

Focus Student

Lucas was our lucky student last week! He added a theme to his day- use your imagination!

Our day kicked off with an engaging LEGO session, where students unleashed their creativity, making impressive creations in a short time.

Lucas also chose to spend sometime Tee-Pee making. It was lovely to see the collaboration and the sharing of building techniques from some of the experts!

As the day drew to a close, we indulged in a beloved favourite game - Hunter!

Jane is our lucky student next week. We look forward to seeing what her day entails!

----Connection to Country ----

On Wednesday, we were very fortunate to participate in a Connection to Country excursion at the Royal Botanical Gardens.

The travel on the train and use of tram was just as exciting.

Students were paired with an older buddy. A shout out to our senior leaders who did this beautifully.

After a quick lunch, staff and students were taken for a walk through the gardens, stopping at significant locations to educate us on Aboriginal culture.

Our leader taught us about the significance of the bunya pine, a sacred tree considered by many Aboriginal people.

Paperbark tree- here we learnt of the many uses for the flexible bark.

Tea Tree- Aboriginal people using the tree as an antiseptic and herbal medicine.

Remnant Melbourne-a small area consisting of a 350-year-old eucalyptus tree and some native shrubs, s preserved to educate people about the swamp-like area Melbourne was prior to colonisation.

Students then spent some time sitting in a pavilion as our educator explained many tools and resources used by Wurundjeri people. Some items were possum skins, a hunting boomerang, an eel trap, and a coolamon.

She also taught us about the Tanderrum ceremony, which brought together the east Kulin Nation people (including Taungurung People).

We are proud of our wonderful students for their ability to wonder, explore, listen and lead at various points throughout the day. We also saw a high level of resilience when needing to wait for bathrooms and eating times.

Well done, everybody!

As you can see another fun and eventful time in our Year 2/3 space this fortnight.

Have a beautiful weekend.

See you all Monday ready for a week of swimming!
