Working together on the Cranbourne Campus

Project - Community Vegie Patch - Stage 2

In March, a delegation from the Year 10 Youth Ministry Religion class came forward with a proposal for a joint project with the VET Building and Construction students and the VET Parks and Gardens students, for a raised garden bed somewhere in the College grounds.

Minh Tran, Taylor Thompson and Tyla Wakeling supported by Ms Melvin, devised a plan for a community garden patch as a practical representation of the Catholic Social Teaching - ‘Care for our Common Home’. At the planning stage the students toured the campus with a keen eye on the best location for such a project - a place that was both visible and accessible, enabling it to be a constant reminder of our need to be more sustainable and easily accessed for nurturing of the garden. Stage one was underway with an expertly written proposal tabled to the College Leadership who gave ‘in principle’ support.

Stage two was to enlist the Year 10 VET Building and Construction class to undertake the design and build phase of this joint project. Yesterday the Building students constructed the plantar boxes in place. These had been designed and the designs shared with the Youth Ministry students for their endorsement before the measuring and pre construction preparation was completed. Below are photos of the students constructing and proudly sitting by their handy work. We now look forward to calling on the expertise of out Year 10 Parks and Gardens class to prepare the area, line and fill the plantar boxes of our Community Garden project  and plant the produce that they believe would be most suited to the area. The first image shows Building and Construction student Mia Carruthers drilling down the legs, while the other images capture the pride of the whole class once their work had finished.

Students thrive when they can see tangible results for their work in school. This satisfaction is even greater when we experience the impact of Collaboration, which is of course of one of our five School Wide Expectations - ROCKS. I will use this forum to celebrate the completion of Stage 3 in the coming weeks.
