Numeracy News

Dear Parents,

With parent teacher interviews around the corner, you may be wondering what your child's report tells you about your child's numeracy development.

The Mathematics K–10 syllabus outcomes and their related content are organised in three areas:

  • Number and algebra
  • Measurement and space
  • Statistics and probability

Your child will receive an overall grade for in each of these areas. This grade will reflect your child's achievement, at this point in time, of the knowledge and in the focus areas which have been taught.  At this point in the year, your child has not been exposed to all the content in each focus area and therefore, their Semester One Report is a snapshot of their current learning progress.

Your child will also receive an overall grade for Working Mathematically. This grade area is taught and assessed within each focus area.

The Working mathematically processes present in the Mathematics K–10 syllabus are:

  • communicating
  • understanding and fluency
  • reasoning
  • problem solving

Students learn to work mathematically by using these processes in an interconnected way. In each unit of work students are explicitly taught how to work mathematically and demonstrate their working mathematically skills through their application of the content. Your child's working mathematically grade is reflective of their overall ability to use these skills across all three of the focus areas. Often students may develop an understanding of the content knowledge, however, require support to independently apply working mathematically skills to the content being taught.

Our teachers will be well prepared to discuss your child's academic progress at our Week 10 parent teacher meetings; however, if you are unsure about your child's numeracy development or would like to understand their progress further you may like to discuss:

  • What are my child's strengths in Numeracy?
  • What number facts/ skills could my child develop further?
  • Are there measurement skills or specific content areas that my child may need to revisit? e.g. telling the time.
  • How can my child further develop their working mathematically skills?

We will be offering a repeat session of our K-6 Numeracy Parent Information Night. We have decided to wait until next term to offer this repeat session to allow parents to meet with their child's teacher at the Semester One Parent Teacher interviews. We understand it has been a busy end to the term and want to find a time that best suits our parent community. It may also be a great opportunity for parents to be able to discuss your child's individual progress at the interviews prior to attending the K-6 Numeracy Information Night. Thank you again to all of the parents who attended this term's session.

Thank you for supporting your child's learning in Numeracy!

Kind regards,
