Year 5/6
English
Throughout this term students will be exploring different forms of informative text and their features. Increasing student vocabulary knowledge is an area will be a key focus. This will allow students to apply this to their own writing ensuring their ideas and sentences flow sequentially.
Students will continue to develop skills in the six writing traits including; organisation, sentence fluency, ideas, voice, word choice and conventions. They will delve into many different informative model texts and have opportunities to discuss these with peers and teachers.
Mathematics
Understanding fractions and how they are represented in real life is one of the concepts that students will be learning this term. Being able to look at fractions and convert and compare them to decimals and percentages is also a concept that we will complete a range of activities on.
Students have been completing hands-on activities using 2D shapes and 3D objects. They have become more familiar with the nets that can be used to form different 3D objects and identify different features such as faces and vertices. Students will have many opportunities to locate coordinates and describe locations of different shapes.
Inquiry
Students will be researching and collecting information on a range of Asian and Pacific regions. They will work in groups to discover a range of facts and details that they will collate to display for our end of term Travel Expo. Discovering geographical features, identifying landmarks, comparing land size and population are just a few of the areas that they will be covering. Creating a large scale poster, a model, digital presentation are all things that they will be continuing to work on through this term. This unit will provide insight into how different Asian and Pacific regions compare to Australia.
Keep an eye out for an invitation to attend the end of term Travel Expo.
Interschool Sports
Year 6 students have begun competing in interschool sports. Last week they competed against Harrisfield Primary School, the first opportunity to play against another school. They competed in four different sports: netball, sofcrosse, soccer and AFL.
Below are some reflections from students about their matches
I’m in the netball team and played against very tall people. Unfortunately, we lost 8-15. The teamwork and communication was far beyond expectations, everytime your teammate had the ball they would shout out your name which led us closer to the goal.
Anna C
On the AFL team, I played in the midfield position alongside Jieming and Vuthika. Jieming had scored a really good goal near the half line. Tavera was a really good defender and fast runner. I did a lot of impressive handballs and quite a few good kicks. Harriesfield played really well against our team. The score was 36:56, my team had really good communication and teamwork, although we didn’t win we were still very proud of how we played.
Abby
I’m on the soccer team and we won the game! Harrisfield played very well scoring 2 goals against us. Roger was our most valuable player (MVP) scoring a hat-trick (3 goals in a single game), Jason.L scored 1 goal and Chelme scored an amazing header. In the end the scores were 5-2 and we all shook hands and said our goodbyes.
Overall it was fun to play against other schools and hope we win in future matches.
