IT Manager Update

Thursday 15 May 2025

Dear Families, Students and Community Members,

It’s been a little quieter last week here at Mordialloc College, as our Year 10 students have been off campus taking part in Work Experience. This is always an exciting and valuable time in the school year, giving students the chance to step out of the classroom and into the workplace, where they can explore different career options, build new skills, and gain a better understanding of the working world.

We’d like to extend a big thank you to all the employers who have generously opened their doors to our students. Your support and willingness to share your time and expertise make a real difference in their learning and development.

A big thank you also goes to our dedicated staff who have worked hard behind the scenes to coordinate placements and support students throughout the process. Work Experience is a fantastic opportunity for growth, and we’re proud of the way our students have embraced the challenge.

We are also kicking off our new House Points redemption program, so students are able to redeem their House Points for prizes, this is in its testing phase so standby.

Student Devices

Mordialloc College is a BYOD school, and it is expected that students will bring their device in good working order, charged and ready to go each morning.

Students frequently request loan devices at the start of the day because their own devices aren't charged, indicating they may have been up late gaming or socialising online.  This not only impacts their ability to participate in class but can impact on their ability to learn. Our SchoolTV parent resource has some suggestions on how to support your child to manage their digital device usage at home.

If your student is unable to bring a device to school—for example, if it is being repaired—please inform their Year Level Coordinator so that we can provide appropriate support.

We have our new device charging bay which students can use to charge their devices.  Students are also welcome to bring in their own chargers for use in our new charging bay.

eSafety and Cybersecurity

At Mordialloc College, we prioritise eSafety and cybersecurity, incorporating these topics into our Home Group, Mentor programs, and Digital Technologies curriculum. Our IT team also actively monitors and addresses issues related to school systems.

However, we need families to be partners in eSafety and cybersecurity, as there are many online services and content providers students can access while not at school. We encourage you to engage with your student about the content they engage with online. The eSafety Commissioner has a range of webinars for parents and carers coming up, along with a toolbox of resources. More resources can also be found in our SchoolTV parent portal.

Given the increasing number of cybersecurity incidents, it may also be wise to do a security check up of your family’s various online accounts. The Australian Cyber Security Centre has a range of guides on how to protect yourself and your family online, including using secure passphrases, multifactor authentication, and keeping devices up to date.
