Grade 6 Community News

Dear families,
Grade 6 has been working hard over the past two weeks and enjoying being back at school after the Easter break. Students participated in Athletics Day and are gearing up for an exciting term ahead.
Reading:
In Reading, we have started our unit on the French Revolution. Students are using their knowledge from the Enlightenment unit to support their understanding and learning of the French Revolution.
Writing:
In Writing, Grade 6 have started learning about debates. Students have learnt what debates are, how and why we have debates, and have explored rebuttals and counterarguments. Students will continue learning about debates, eventually leading to a debating tournament.
Civics and Citizenship:
In Week 1, students learnt about the Australian electoral process. They learnt about the levels of government and their responsibilities, preferential voting, and the steps to vote. Then, students took part in a practice election where they enrolled to vote, voted using a ballot, and learnt how to count votes using the preferential voting system.
Mathematics:
In Mathematics during Week 1, we learnt about 3D shapes. Specifically, students identified the cross-sections of shapes, sorted objects based on their cross-sections, and described right prisms. In Week 2, students began learning about time, calculating elapsed time to the minute, as well as determining the start and finish times of events.
Sport:
All Grade 6 students will continue participating in Sport. This term, until Gala Day, students will participate weekly in the sport of their choice. Students will participate on Tuesday or Wednesday afternoons, with activities including soccer, netball, softball, AFL, and volleyball.
Athletics:
Students participated in House Athletics on Tuesday, 22nd April. The rain held off for us and students received house points for participating in each event, with the top three girls and top three boys in each class, earning extra points for their house. Students competed in long jump, high jump, discus, shot put, hurdles, and the 100m race. We ended the day with a 100m final and an 800m run. All students did an excellent job!
