Grade 5 Community News

Dear Grade 5 families,
Welcome back to school for term 2. It is hard to believe that we are at the end of week 2 already. We have had a successful start to the term and are looking forward to working hard in the coming weeks.
Upcoming events:
● Year 5 Open Hour: 9am-10am on the 16th of May.
● Pupil Free Day: Friday 30th May
Knowledge Building
Our first unit for knowledge building in term 2 is Economics. During this unit students will investigate that to function, every society must answer basic economic questions:What will society produce? How will society produce it? How will society distribute it? The answers to these questions are shaped by many factors, including access to resources, access to technology, and cultural values. Similarly, individuals also make economic decisions about what to buy, where to buy it, when to save, how much to save, and so on. These decisions are informed by the availability of goods and services, prices, and personal values. In this unit, students will explore the factors that influence both macro (society-level) and micro (individual-level) economic decision-making and study examples of how economic decision-making has influenced history.
Mathematics
The first two weeks of term 2 students have been learning about calculating and exploring the difference between perimeter and area. Students have been building upon prior knowledge of measuring perimeter and area using various units of measurement in Year 4. In this unit, they have calculated the perimeter of rectangles using a formula, solved problems, and investigated connections between perimeter and area. In weeks 3 and 4 we will be moving on to fractions.
Vocabulary
Over the past two weeks the students have been learning 10 new words each week from the economics unit. Students look at the meaning of the words, synonyms and antonyms for the words, and how to use the words in sentences. They are then using these words in their writing and reading.
Reminders
- Student journals will not be being sent home this year. Students will write their reading in the journals when they arrive at school each day.
- Please purchase a copy of Inside Out and Back Again for your child before the beginning of week 5.
