Grade 3 Community News

Dear Grade 3 Families,

Welcome to the start of Term 2! We hope you had a good break and feel refreshed for another great term ahead of us. We have a few exciting events coming up; please keep an eye out for messages that come through on Compass and take the time to read through the notifications.

Knowledge Building Unit - Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening.

We are starting a new text called Yirra and Her Deadly Dog, Demon. We will be exploring some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural narratives and having discussions around this. Some material from the text reflects the views of the period in which the content was created or set but would not be considered appropriate for today. Through our stop and jots, we have been creating connections with situations at home and school. We are looking at how sometimes we feel frustrated and how we can deal with that.

We are also looking at adjectives and how they are able to make our writing more interesting for the reader.

In writing, we are beginning to look at factual recounts. We are following the structure of persuasive texts to affirm the learning we have already done. Part of factual recounts is learning the correct time connectives. For example, afterwards, eventually, last month, and before. This is helping with our writing and understanding chronological order.

Numeracy—Division

In math, we are looking at how multiplication and division are interconnected. These are key steps in learning that help our students develop a strong number sense and prepare for more complex math down the road. We have been looking at how we can build on facts we already know. For example, if we know 2 x 6, we can figure out 3 x 6 by adding another 6 onto our answer. To help with this learning, we look at arrays, number lines and drawings. We are using our prior knowledge of fact families to support our learning, eg 3 x 4 = 12, so 12 ÷ 3 = 4.

Below is an example of the questions we have been working on.

Vocabulary

This term our target words are provided from our novel study Yirra and her Deadly Dog Demon. Our week 1 words were sly, nuisance, ridiculous, gentle, ancient, and sprint. Our week 2 words are gathered, squirm, sprawl, whine, grumble, professional and smug.

Students enjoy sharing their learning of these words with you, and we encourage you to support and surprise them by using these words when the opportunity presents itself.

 Friendly Reminders

Friday 30th May is a Pupil Free Day for report writing

●   We ask students to read for 20 minutes each school day and then record their reading nights in their student reading journals that we keep at school to track their reading nights. Young readers who read frequently develop essential reading skills.

●   We thank and remind families to continue to support their children in charging their iPads and bringing their headphones ready for each school day.

● In weeks 8 and 9, we have our upcoming excursion to the Melbourne Museum, please make payment & give consent ASAP.
