The photos below capture a dynamic English lesson with our Year 8 students, who have been exploring the theme of power, powerlessness, and feeling powerful. As part of their collaborative learning, each student began by writing a short statement or a few descriptive words for each of the three concepts on individual cards using bold markers. Using the Open Space method, students then self-organised into groups based on the term that most interested them. In these groups, they shared reflections, developed a shared definition, and created a visual symbol or metaphor to express their collective understanding.

In the following lesson, students brought these ideas to life through creative skits or mimes, portraying powerful interpretations of their chosen concepts. This activity encouraged critical thinking, creativity, and empathy through meaningful group collaboration.
