Year 8 PBL – Thrift Shop Fashion Challenge

As part of their Project-Based Learning (PBL) unit, our Year 8 students recently embarked on the Thrift Shop Fashion Challenge: this hands-on task combined creativity, critical thinking, sustainability, and budgeting.

With just $15 in hand and a clear design brief, students visited local op shops to select second-hand garments to bring back to school. These items would be repurposed, upcycled, or recycled into entirely new products. From bold patterns and retro finds to fabrics and accessories with hidden potential, each student successfully selected pieces that suited their vision.

This activity encouraged sustainable fashion practices and allowed students to develop their problem-solving and planning skills in a real-world context. Their enthusiasm, creativity, and thoughtful approach made the experience successful.

We look forward to seeing the final transformations as students bring their fashion ideas to life.

Year 11 Media Students Explore Australian Film Culture at ACMI

Our Year 11 Media students recently ventured into the heart of Melbourne to explore Federation Square and visit ACMI's Story of the Moving Image exhibition. From the early days of Australian cinema to the digital evolution of storytelling, the exhibition provided a fascinating insight into the history that shapes their current VCE unit: Australian Stories.

Following the exhibition, students were treated to a special screening of Top Screen 2024, a curated selection of high-achieving VCE Media short films. The creativity and technical excellence of these student films have already inspired our students, who are buzzing with ideas for their upcoming short film projects.

"It was a powerful and motivating experience that connects theory to practice and encourages original storytelling." – Mr Mark Alexander, Media Teacher
