Kofi Kunkpe Drumming Workshops

Senior Primary students were treated to a fabulous workshop last Friday, run by Ghanian musician, Kofi Kunkpe.

As the students entered the theatrette, they were greeted by a sea of djembes placed like regal statues in readiness for students to enjoy. There was also music. Kofi was sitting behind a balafon (a west African type of marimba), playing a cheerful melody, which he then taught the students how to sing. The rough translation is that a mum is calling her children in for dinner and they are on-purpose not hearing properly, continuing with their games…..some things are the same the world over.

Students were captivated from the start and Kofi commented on how quietly they entered the room. There was plenty to see, hear and experience during the workshop. Kofi showed students how young people in Ghana carry many things, balancing them on their heads – our MECS students had a go, with the record being 5 bowls balanced – congratulations Kem!!

The best was yet to come, as Kofi took the students through their paces playing many grooves on the djembes. It was a fantastic experience for our Senior Primary students who have been learning about music from other cultures this term during music lessons. Quote of the day was Jireh, who said to me afterwards, “You should get more people in to have workshops like that,” nodding sagely, “I loved it!”

What a great idea!

Thanks to everyone involved for helping with supervision and swapping class times to make it all work.
