Queen Victoria Market & Chinatown Excursion

The Year 11 Business Management students recently took their learning beyond the classroom with an excursion to Queen Victoria Market and Chinatown. At the market, students explored a diverse range of small businesses, analysing how stallholders attract customers, recognising the importance of product placement and customer service, while also observing the challenges of operating in a competitive environment. The visit to Chinatown provided further insight into cultural influences on business, and the role of tourism in supporting local enterprises. This hands-on experience allowed students to connect theory with real-world practice, provided them an opportunity to sample some lovely fresh produce, and learn that the experience of running a business is invaluable, in the development of entrepreneurial skills. Enjoy some student reflections below.

From the excursion I learned about competition and how to start a business. I also found some inspiration for the upcoming Father's Day Stall.

Hamish

The excursion to the QVM was very interesting because we learned about how businesses stock and present their products.

Lucas

The excursion afforded us the opportunity to learn about how to start a business from scratch.

Riley

The excursion to the QVM was interesting because I tried different foods, and some for the first time like kangaroo meat.

Ella

The QVM was an eye opening experience as we could see first hand how businesses operated. As we are running a Father's Day Stall later on in the year, we also got some good ideas and tips in regards to what we sell, how we sell, the importance of money management, marketing ideas and much more.

Olivia

The excursion to the QVM and Chinatown was interesting as we were able to compare how businesses work in different areas and under different circumstances. As well as understanding the benefits and downsides to where you set up. Additionally we learned why people start a business and how to maintain one.

Emma

We learned interesting tips from the stall holders about how to start a business and what is the best way to plan and get set up.
