Middle Years
Dr Ben Hawthorne
After a period of medical leave, this week marked my return to school — and it is great to be back. I have been impressed by the warmth and kindness shown to me by our students, and it has served as a reminder of why I enjoy being part of this school community.
It has been a pleasure to observe our Year 7 students settling so confidently into College life. They have found new friendship groups and move between classes with a sense of ease and purpose. While they carry themselves with composure, it is only natural that new or unexpected situations may still bring the occasional flutter of nerves — and that is entirely to be expected.
Our Year 8s have shown real maturity and heart, not only looking out for one another but going out of their way to include their Year 7 peers in games and activities during recess and lunch. This kind of social generosity speaks volumes about their character.
The Year 9s returned from regional (Wannon) experience at The Outside Inn with glowing reports - from both students and teachers alike. The activities were thoroughly enjoyed, and the opportunity to live and work together as a community was invaluable. This experience lays a positive foundation for what lies ahead — the Urban (Melbourne) Experience in Term Two and the Global (Vietnam) Experience in Term Three.
Across the board, our Middle Years students have made a truly impressive start to 2026. As assessment tasks begin to accumulate and the pressures of the school year build, the kindness and inclusivity they have already demonstrated will matter more than ever. I hope they carry this spirit with them throughout the year.
