PBL- Learning about Minding our own Business

During PBL this week, we have been focusing on the skill of helping students understand the value of minding their own business.

This doesn’t mean ignoring others or not caring. Instead, it’s about learning when something is our responsibility and when it’s best to step back.

Children are naturally curious and often want to be involved in everything happening around them. However, getting involved in situations that don’t concern them can sometimes lead to misunderstandings, distractions from learning, or even conflict between peers.

We encourage students to ask themselves:

  • Is this my problem to solve?
  • Am I helping, or am I making things bigger?
  • Should I let a teacher handle this instead?

By learning to focus on their own actions and choices, students develop:

  • Greater independence
  • Stronger self-regulation skills
  • Improved concentration in class
  • Healthier friendships

Of course, we also teach the difference between minding your own business and seeking help. If a child sees someone being unsafe, hurt, or treated unfairly, it’s always important to speak up and tell a trusted adult. Knowing the difference is a key part of building confidence and responsibility.

At home, families can support this learning by encouraging children to focus on what they can control—their own behaviour, effort, and responses. Simple reminders like “Worry about your choices” or “Is that something you need to be involved in?” can help reinforce this message.

By guiding children to invest their energy in their own growth, we help them become more thoughtful, resilient, and respectful individuals.

There is also a great song that we have learned! You may wish to sing it at home!

Here are some wonderful posters we have made about Minding our own business.
