Year 5/6 HAAS learning the Australian government system
This term in HASS, our Year 5/6 students at Brooklyn Park have been learning all about how the government works here in Australia. They’ve explored how decisions are made and compared our system of government with those in other countries.
Students examined the three levels of government (local, state and federal) and learnt how laws are made and who represents the population. They also discovered Australia’s unique “Washminster” system and discussed what it means to live in a representative democracy.
To demonstrate their learning, students created colourful posters and researched using various resources. They even practised writing bibliographies to list their sources.
It’s been wonderful to see students so interested and engaged in learning about Australia’s system of government.

Year 1/2 Central Market excursion
The Year 1/2 classes have had an incredible term learning about “Connections of People to Places” in HASS. They focused on significant places for Aboriginal communities, the city of Adelaide, and themselves. We ended the learning with a classic Adelaide excursion to the Adelaide Central Markets.
Students explored seven international stores within the markets in small groups, holding their 'Culture Passports', to understand the significance of these multicultural food stalls.
We chose the Adelaide Central Markets as a deeply significant place in our city for two reasons. It was one of the first undercover markets in the Southern Hemisphere, and it was also one of the first places where people from all over the world could buy and sell their ‘food from home.’
We had a brilliant time and inspired a few families to go on another market trip!
