Year Six

Dear Year Six Families,
It is hard to believe how quickly this term is moving along! With the end of Term Three in sight, our Year Six students have continued to demonstrate dedication, creativity, and enthusiasm in their learning. The past fortnight has been filled with meaningful progress across Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Inquiry, and of course, preparations for the much-anticipated PYP Exhibition.
Reading
In Reading, students have been finalising their Text Innovation pieces, taking mentor texts and reshaping them into their own imaginative versions. They have also been learning about sentence structures—simple, compound, and complex—and how these can be used to build variety and flow in their writing. In addition, students participated in a Reader’s Theatre task, which gave them the chance to practise fluency and expression while reading aloud and working collaboratively with their peers.
Writing
Students are currently completing their Information Reports. They have been working through the final stages of the writing process, including editing, revising, and publishing their work. This process has allowed them to refine their ideas, improve clarity, and produce polished pieces that showcase their ability to inform and engage readers through clear organisation and accurate information.
Spelling Bee
The Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee also culminated with our Saltwater Year Six finalists — Hannah Sheat, Rachel Khaw, Gagan Velkur, Kumayl Zaidi, and Hans Syamsuhadi — proudly participating in the State-wide spelling test.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students have continued to build their understanding of fractions and decimals. They have been consolidating strategies through My Numeracy and preparing for their post-assessment of fractions, decimals and percentages. The focus has remained on applying knowledge in real-world contexts and explaining their mathematical thinking with confidence.
Inquiry
This fortnight, our Inquiry lessons have centred around ecosystems. Students explored food chains and food webs, learning how producers, consumers, and decomposers are all interdependent on one another. These investigations have sparked curiosity about the delicate balance within ecosystems and the important role every organism plays in maintaining stability.
Exhibition
Excitement continues to grow as preparations for the Exhibition ramp up in early Term Four. Students have been finalising their research boards, completing their inquiries, and beginning the design process to showcase their work. Support from mentors has been instrumental in helping them deepen their understanding and refine their presentations.
An exciting development has been the introduction of action pieces, where students consider how their Exhibition work can create meaningful change in their community or personal lives. This step has encouraged them to think beyond research and presentation, towards impact and purpose.
Student Leadership Spotlight: Exhibition Artwork
This artwork shows two hands covered in flags from around the world. The hands remind us that no matter where we come from, we are all connected.

Mollie and I chose this design because it embodies all 6 of our inquiries. The little drawings around the side, relate to all the Transdisciplinary Themes. We decided to draw our schools’ logo in the middle of the circle to show that everyone belongs at this school and that we’re inviting the community to our school’s Exhibition. Our slogan, “Curious Minds, Big Discoveries” was created so that students know that there is no limit to where their knowledge can go.

Raeka and choose this design because the symbols represents the 6 trans themes for our unit of injury. The symbols are little drawings to show all the trans theme of the unit of inqurys we have learned throughout the year. The slogan with the banner means that students in Saltwater can achieve anything and have big ideas and discoveries.

This artwork is more than a design, it’s a celebration of our learning journey, our unity, and our belief that students can make a difference.
