Year Two

The Year Two students have been fantastic thinkers throughout the past two weeks, what a term it has been!

Maths:

Year Two students have been learning about measurement by using informal units including pencils, blocks and teddies to measure classroom items to compare lengths. They have also explored mass through hefting objects and capacity by comparing how much different containers can hold using informal units.

Inquiry:

In our Unit of Inquiry, students have been designing and building a Minecraft Biome World.  They followed a plan they created, ensuring they are thinkers to ensure they are using sensible locations such as near water, safe ground, and areas with access to food. Students have also been practising their communication skills by explaining to their peers at least one advantage and one difficulty of living in the places they created.

Excursion:

Students also had their excursion on Thursday 11th of September to the Local Landscapes. They were explorers as they navigated their way through Werribee Park and Point Cook Costal Park.

Writing:

In Writing, students have been researching a landform of their choice. They were able to list different facts and organise them into a graphic organiser. Next, they used their graphic organiser to structure and to write their subheadings and information Report.

Spelling/Language Conventions:

Students have been learning about Singular Nouns and Plurals. A plural means more than one.

Students have been exploring plurals for different nouns by;

  • adding /s/.

  • add /es/.

  • changing the /y/ to an /i/ and add /es/.

  • ending in f – life – lives, leaf – leaves.

Reading:

In Reading, students have been focusing on Non- fiction texts linking to our Unit of Inquiry 4. They have been exploring the features of the texts which include table of contents, glossary, subtitles, photographs and facts. Students have also used compare and contrast between Non- fiction and Fiction texts.

Wellbeing:

In Wellbeing, students have been learning about the importance of knowing who they can go to for help. Using the “Helping Hand” activity, they drew a hand and wrote the names of five trusted people they could talk to if they felt upset or sad. They also created a hand for people they themselves can help, learning that they can be both help seekers and help givers. Students shared their helping hands in class and are encouraged to share them at home with parents or carers to add any other important names.
